I’ve just put my own son’s Year 11 PPE (mock) dates into the diary.

And I know I’m definitely not the only Year 11 parent starting to look at the next few months and think… here we go!

Mocks are often the point where things start to feel a bit more real. They can also be really useful for showing where a pupil is doing well and, importantly, where there are gaps that we still have plenty of time to work on.

And I think that last bit is important.

There is still time.

If they’re struggling with Maths, don’t understand how to approach an English question or have gaps appearing in Science, finding that out now gives them time to do something about it.

At Conexus, our Year 11 pupils can work with qualified teachers in English, Maths and Science, choosing one, two or all three subjects depending on where they need the support.

We have both Foundation and Higher groups, although availability varies between sessions.

And if you’ve got a teenager who isn’t exactly jumping for joy at the thought of tuition 😂, they’re very welcome to come along for a free trial first and see what they think.

The birthday celebrations made it to Monday tuition… just about! 😂🎈💜

I decided to take our big 5 balloon along to St John’s yesterday to celebrate five years since our very first session there.

Unfortunately, I managed to detach it from its string getting it out of the car. 🤦‍♀️😂 Thankfully I grabbed it before it floated away forever!

But then one of our lovely mums arrived with this card and a box of treats for us to celebrate our 5th birthday. 🥹💜

I was genuinely so touched.

Five years ago, we started in this very hall with just one learner. To still be here five years later, running our Monday sessions every week and to have families who have become such a part of Conexus that they’re celebrating the milestone with us too… well, that means rather a lot.

Running a small business can be a bit of a rollercoaster at times but moments like this remind me just how lucky I am to have the families, learners and tutors that we do.

5 years!! How has that happened?! 💜🎈

Five years ago today, on 4th October 2021, I walked into St John’s Church Hall in Stafford for our very first Conexus Tuition Stafford and Stone session.

We had one learner. 😂

One learner, one venue and a small team of three tutors.

I’ve been looking back through photos today and found these from those early days. Me looking very pleased with my banners 😂 and St John’s Church.

And five years later, we’re still running sessions in that very same room every Monday. 💜

Quite a lot has happened in between!

That one learner became hundreds of local children and young people. We’ve added more sessions, more venues, lots more brilliant teachers and supported pupils right from primary through to their GCSEs.

But actually, the bit I love most hasn’t changed at all.

It’s still those little moments.

The “I get it now!” moments.
The child who starts believing they actually CAN do Maths.
The teenager who really didn’t want to come to tuition but decides it’s actually alright. 😂
The messages on results days.
The confidence that starts to appear when something finally clicks.

That’s why I started it in the first place.

And apparently five years of Conexus is a significant birthday in our house to warrant flowers, a card and a massive number 5 balloon from my husband. 💐💜 🎈

I’m not sure the Fiona in these photos five years ago had any idea what she was starting!

So, happy 5th birthday to us. 🎂

And a huge thank you to our learners, families, our brilliant team of teachers, our venues and everyone who recommends us, shares our posts or tells another parent about us.

Five years. And it all started with one learner. 💜

Now to see what year six brings…

Getting ready for tomorrow’s session at Berkswich Methodist Church in Stafford ➗✖️✏️

This is for the Year 5 group where they’ll match the questions to the answers.

The Year 6 group will be playing a snakes and ladders long division game to embed this method. 🎲 Coloured whiteboard pens also at the ready to help with understanding the steps involved 🖊️

Did you know each long multiplication and long division question on the SATs paper is worth 2 marks? This is why we take the time to ensure these methods are secure. 🌟

What an amazing morning spent with some brilliant local business women 💜

I absolutely love going to the Female Founder events organised by the lovely Rachelle Hewitt Social Media. The energy in the room is always infectious and hearing about all the amazing businesses being built and run by local women is genuinely inspiring.

And today’s venue was pretty epic too! 😍 Saint James Events has created such a beautiful space for all kinds of celebrations.

It actually reminded me of the little church in Slindon where I got married nearly 20 years ago 🥰

A really lovely morning of chatting, connecting and being reminded just how many brilliant women we have running businesses locally.

🎯 " I only need a 4"

Over the past five years, we have heard this quite a lot from our GCSE learners.

BUT there's nothing 'only' about a Level 4 in English and Maths.

If your teenager doesn't achieve a Level 4, they'll usually need to continue studying that subject (English and/or Maths) after Year 11, alongside whatever they choose next whether that's sixth form, college or an apprenticeship. Some courses and next steps after GCSE ask for levels of 4 or above to be able to do the qualification.

That's why we call it "The Magic 4" - it keeps doors open.

For some, the goal is getting that all-important 4 and when they're currently working at a 2 or 3, that can feel like a pretty big mountain to climb.

That's where we can help. 💜

Our Foundation GCSE groups give pupils the opportunity to go back over gaps, practise the things they find difficult and build their confidence in a small group with a fully qualified teacher.

Plus one of the beauties of the way our sessions work is that pupils can choose English, Maths, Science – or all three subjects over 2 hours.

With mocks approaching, now is a really good time to start and they can try us for FREE first.

“I think I get it…”

A few minutes later…

“I understand it now. I can do it.” 💜

Honestly, this nearly made me cry yesterday.

One of our Year 7 pupils was working in his small group with Jake, our new Maths tutor, learning how to write a number as a product of its prime factors – pulling together his understanding of multiplication, factors, prime numbers and indices.

He’d come along for his free trial the week before and yesterday he walked back through the door with noticeably more confidence. He knew us, he knew what to expect and he knew how our sessions worked.

Then came one of those moments.

Something that hadn’t made sense started to click.

First came, “I think I get it.”

So, with a little encouragement, Jake gave him another one to try.

Then another.

Until eventually it became, “I understand it now. I can do it.”

And the best bit? Nobody had to persuade him to keep going. Once he’d realised he could do it, he naturally wanted to try another. And another.

This. This is why we do what we do.

I went into teaching for those lightbulb moments – that change in a child’s face, and even in how they hold themselves, when something finally makes sense and “I can’t do this” starts becoming “actually… I can.”

And it’s a huge part of why I started Conexus Tuition Stafford and Stone nearly five years ago.

Sometimes a child just needs the chance to experience success and start believing that they can do it. That’s when the momentum starts to snowball and real progress starts to shine through.

And this is exactly why those Year 7 foundations matter too. What he was working on yesterday isn’t just Year 7 Maths. Understanding factors, prime numbers and indices is knowledge he’ll be expected to have secure for his Maths GCSE further down the line.

Yesterday, it clicked.

And I have a feeling he’ll walk through the door next Monday believing he can do it just a little bit more than he did before. 💜

We get asked a lot what tuition we actually provide…

“Do you do GCSE?”
“Do you do 11+?”
“Do you have sessions for Year 2?”

Yes, yes and yes! 💜

We support learners from Year 1 right through to Year 11 and their GCSEs, with English and Maths for our younger pupils and English, Maths and Science as they move through secondary school.

At GCSE, we have specific groups for both Foundation and Higher, so pupils can work at the right level for them.

We believe in face-to-face tuition, and across our three local venues in Stafford and Stone we offer a wide range of sessions throughout the week.

But there's one thing that stays the same across every single one of them: all of our awesome tutors are fully qualified teachers, with the relevant safeguarding checks and training in place.

Well… maybe two things. We also have pretty amazing learners at all of them! 😂💜

One of the things I love about our small-group model is the flexibility.

📚 Our KS3 and GCSE pupils can choose one, two or all three core subjects – English, Maths and Science. Those choosing all three get specialist teaching across the subjects within one two-hour session.

✏️ Our younger learners can have specialist teaching in English and Maths, with each subject taught in a focused 40-minute session.

👩‍🏫 And with no more than six learners in a group, our teachers can get to know the children in front of them, identify gaps and adapt what they're doing to meet their needs.

We've been using this model locally for almost five years now and it works.

So whether you've got a Year 2 who needs a confidence boost, a Year 5 preparing for the 11+, a Year 6 heading towards SATs, a Year 7 or 8 settling into secondary school or a Year 10/11 pupil working towards their GCSEs, there's a good chance we can help.

We currently have some spaces across our Monday, Wednesday and Saturday sessions in Stafford and Stone and your child is very welcome to come along for a free trial first.
