In these last 2 weeks we have said goodbye to our Year 2 children, as they had their very last Forest School session.
We toasted each other with our own delicious elderflower cordial, we played our favourite games, and we shared memories, smiles - and cake!
Goodbye Year 2, it has been truly heartwarming for us to see your love for nature - long may it continue to grow.

Forest School offers the perfect environment for supported risk taking and assessing. We were very impressed by some of our learners skills when choosing to challenge themselves to a shimmy up the trees 🌳. Lots of conversations were had between them about the best ways to support themselves and techniques to get higher each time. 😊

We’ve had some magical visitors in our Wild Area! Our lucky VIFs (Very Important Fairies) have been made most welcome.
The children have built them beautiful castles, filled tiny pots with treasures for them, and even made fairy dust!
And some children say they have heard mystical music coming from the fairy door on the old maple tree, so we think they seem very happy to stay a while!

Our Forest Schoolers have been trying Hapa Zome, which is the magical art of printing with plants by hammering.
The children foraged different leaves, to experiment with different effects.
It’s a lovely way to connect with the local seasonal plants whilst creating beautiful artwork.

Some of our children have been lucky enough to see the amazing spectacle of the Ermine moth caterpillars, wriggling up their extensive silk webs, gathering together in large groups, and now starting to make their cocoons before their outstanding transformation into the moth.
The children have been mesmerised, and rush to see them on the way to the forest. 😊🐛

One of our Year One children had the idea of making a boat - perfect for this rainy weather!
It proved a popular plan - and soon lots of children were making little boats, using palm drills to add a mast with a leaf sail.
Then we all went over to the pond to launch them all!
We watched as they set off on their intrepid journey over perilous waters... (then rescued them with a fishing net!😀)

After singing our Forest School Welcome song, a group of our Reception girls always request to sing it again, in silly voices!!
So here they are, singing our song, followed by their version of how the boys would sing it, followed by their version of how the fairies would sing it!!

We had a bet with our Year One children that they were going to make something to cook on the campfire that they had never eaten before in their lives!! And we were right!
They picked fresh new hazel leaves, and used them to wrap up a parcel of cookie dough, which we cooked in a pan.
The whole parcel can be eaten - gooey melting cookie dough, wrapped in a crunchy nutty leaf coating. It was a very big hit with all the children - we sadly had to refuse requests for seconds!! 😋

With the sun finally making an appearance, we have been excited to be able to go back to our "big woods" with year 2 this week. There has been talk of nests, some wild foraging, the thrill of playing Eagle eyes, and some quieter moments spotting the bluebells and listening to the spring sap rising in the trees 🌳. Let's all keep hoping for more of the bright skies. 🌞
