GeoBus St Andrews GeoBus is an educational outreach project developed at the University of St Andrews. It is sponsored by NEO Energy.

GeoBus is an exciting educational outreach project developed by the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews. The aim of GeoBus is to:

1) Support the teaching of Earth science in secondary schools by providing teaching resources that are not readily available to educators.

2) Inspire young learners by introducing new Earth science research outcomes presented by researchers.

3) Provide a bridge between industry, HEIs, Research Councils, and schools in order to highlight career opportunities in geology specifically, and Earth sciences and STEM areas more broadly. On Wednesday January 18th 2012, GeoBus was launched at Buckhaven High School, and TV presenter Professor Iain Stewart attended to officially launch the project. Members of the University of St Andrews and the original GeoBus industrial sponsors (Maersk, Shell and Centrica) were present at the launch. The current funding for GeoBus from sponsors NEO Energy will support continued outreach activities, production of education resources and visits to schools throughout the school term time until 2026.

Joe, our GeoBus intern, was in Norway this summer representing GeoBus without Borders while conducting his geology mapping project.

Joe organised translating the GeoBus Happy Families cards and posters related to his research into Norwegian and gave these to the Norges geologiske undersøkelse (Norwegian geological survey) as well as schools and public libraries; Husabø ungdomsskole, Vikeså skule and Bjerkreim folkebibliotek.

He was researching magma chamber processes, with his field site in Rogaland being one of only a handful of places worldwide with such good exposure of repeatedly layered igneous rocks!

Joe was able to find some samples for local schools to study, and with the help of his pre-prepared GeoBus materials was able to explain to locals around his field area why he was interested in the stripey rocks; which formed gradually in layers from molten magma, deep underground. 🪨 🌋

We had a blast with the P6s at Oxgang primary school this week!

They have been learning about natural hazards and so had a lot to tell us in our Exploring Earthquakes and Dodging Disasters workshops.

A highlight was seeing obsidian in real life and not just on minecraft!

Today we looked at all things Hydrology with the higher class at St Ninians!

We built model river systems, and investigated erosion and deposition in the channels. We then created a hydrograph using river discharge from our storm simulators. 🏞️

Lots of fun at St Modan’s high school the last few days.

We ran earthquakes with S2, climate change with S3, volcanoes with S4, and fluvial processes with highers!

Introducing September’s resource of the month: Hydrographs!

If you are wanting to include a hands on practical to help higher students better understand the complex topic of hydrographs… look no further!

Including resources on how to build your own storm simulator and videos of how to run a hydrograph investigation with 4 different land uses. As well as a ‘How to guide’ with discussion questions to complement.

Resources have been produced following teacher demand, free to get in touch with us over any specific resources you would like to see developed!

We had a lovely time on the Isle of Coll with Arinagour Primary School.

Fully suited and booted for the rain, we headed outside to build map models and hunt for mini beasts 👀🪲

Thanks to the children for giving us a map-tour of the island so we could take a trip to their favourite spots.

We had some interesting results to our experiments today. Always fun to be surprised! 🌍

There were a few landslides at Woodmill High school today as we simulated storms through agricultural, urban and grassland surfaces.

We've had great fun over the last 2 days on fieldwork with Environmental Science students from Bell Baxter High School and then with AH Geography students from across Angus.

On Saturday, we ran our Day at the Seashore CLPL day for Environmental Science and Biology teachers. We had sunshine for our fieldwork near Castle Sands and pizza back at base to help with analysing the data. Thanks to all who took part for making it a great day.
