GeoBus St Andrews

GeoBus St Andrews GeoBus is an educational outreach project developed at the University of St Andrews. It is sponsored by NEO Energy.

GeoBus is an exciting educational outreach project developed by the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of St Andrews. The aim of GeoBus is to:

1) Support the teaching of Earth science in secondary schools by providing teaching resources that are not readily available to educators.

2) Inspire young learners by introducing new Earth science research outcomes presented by re

searchers.

3) Provide a bridge between industry, HEIs, Research Councils, and schools in order to highlight career opportunities in geology specifically, and Earth sciences and STEM areas more broadly. On Wednesday January 18th 2012, GeoBus was launched at Buckhaven High School, and TV presenter Professor Iain Stewart attended to officially launch the project. Members of the University of St Andrews and the original GeoBus industrial sponsors (Maersk, Shell and Centrica) were present at the launch. The current funding for GeoBus from sponsors NEO Energy will support continued outreach activities, production of education resources and visits to schools throughout the school term time until 2026.

Great to have Madras College and Webster’s High School join us for days out at Tentsmuir beach learning field skills! 🏖️

Skills included measuring changes in slope to create a sand dune profile. As well as looking at changes in vegetation, soil moisture, temperature and pH across the sand dunes. 📏

For our August Resource of the Month, we have created Climate Change case studies. 🌍

This resource features 5 case studies and a summary fact sheet about different ways the climate is changing as well as key terminology. These case studies are designed to support teachers deliver Third and Fourth Level Geography and Science. ☀️🌧️🔥

GeoBus has been on tour to the Hebrides this week!

We had great fun joining in with INSET days at Sgoil Lionacleit and the Nicolson Institute, working with primary and secondary teachers!

We had fun exploring Species Survival, Dodging Disasters and Monitoring Volcanoes!

We still have a few spaces left on our 'A Day at the Seashore' Teacher CLPL day in St Andrews for secondary environmental science and biology teachers. 🐚

We will be investigating zonation on the rocky-shore and comparing the diversity index of different seashore zones.

Join us on Saturday 29th August for a great day out! Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

This week, we worked with our colleague Stuart Allison from the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of St Andrews to run a fossil hunt and a geology walk at Crail Festival. Thanks to all who took part for their great questions and their enthusiasm!

We’ve had a great week supporting School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of St Andrews sessions for The Sutton Trust summer school. On Monday we discussed volcanoes with Dr Will Hutchison, including looking at rocks that form in different types of volcanic eruption and the making our own model eruptions. Tuesday was an Introduction to Geology with GeoBus, examining hand specimens and thin sections as well as looking at some meteorites. On Wednesday we went Coring Through Time with model cake cores, real rock cores and some model ice cores. On Thursday we explored the minerals needed for modern technologies and considered how we can access them responsibly. And Friday was all about Planet Ocean in a Warming Climate with Dr Graeme MacGilchrist which included practical activities to illustrate the melting of ice in saltwater vs freshwater, to demonstrate ocean currents, to explore the effect of carbon dioxide on the pH of the oceans and differences in the rate of heating of land and oceans. Thanks to all the students who took part for being so much fun to work with this week.
