Yesterday, the children enjoyed a wonderful role-play experience inspired by their interests and ideas. Recently, they have been spending lots of time creating cafés in the home corner, so we decided to extend this interest by setting up our very own café together.
We began by having a group discussion about what we should call our café. After sharing lots of suggestions, the children voted and chose the name "The Honeypot Café."
Next, we explored the kitchen cupboards together, to see what ingredients and resources we already had available. The children helped to identify different foods and drinks that could be included on our menu. Once we had decided what we could offer, we worked together to create menus, adding pictures alongside the items to help everyone recognise what was available.
The children then helped to gather and prepare the food ready for opening. During this process, we discussed how cafés and restaurants prepare their food before customers arrive, explaining that being organised helps service run smoothly and ensures customers receive their orders quickly.
The children thoroughly enjoyed taking on different roles within the café, including chefs, servers, and customers. Throughout the activity, they developed their communication skills, teamwork, problem-solving abilities, and understanding of the world around them, all while having lots of fun following their interests.
