Today! at 5pm. Professors Without Gowns

Professor Sabine Hyland and Professor Judith Wolfe talk about their experiences, their industry, their ideas...

But: Who are they?

Prof Hyland has the rare distinction of being a professor in both Divinity and Anthropology.

The elders of San Juan de Collata, Peru, gave her permission to study ancient, sacred text (in knotted strings) only after having what they interpreted as a sign, a sacred vision, about her. It proved true: she decoded what was a text they thought indecipherable.

And Professor Wolfe? A professor of Philosophical Theology? Who is she?

Among her many interests, the study of the end of the world is one. COVID vaccines are on the horizon, approved in the UK today, and so the world may yet be saved from plague. But maybe Professor Wolfe will tell us what the Apocalypse will look like.

Come and join both in conversation today! Or simply tune in and watch -- it's up to you.

Pause a minute with us, December 2nd at five p.m.

Professors Without Gowns returns, and two new Professors join us.

One reads Heidegger with a glass of gin and tonic to hand; she has three degrees from Oxford. The other might have been the subject of an Inca prophesy; she decoded a lost language.

Mark your calendars – 2nd December at five p.m. – and join us in conversation then!

Who’s joining today?

Professor Mario I. Aguilar, KTS, OSB Cam Obl, PhD, FRHistS, FRSA, FRAS, FRGS, FIBG, FRAI, Professor of Religion and Politics and Director of the Centre for the Study of Religion and Politics (CSRP) at St. Mary's College of the University of St Andrews.

Prof Mario, as many of his students call him, draws upon a wealth of personal experience and veritable rolodex of stories as he steers clear of ivory towers. Born in Chile, he came of age in a time of political turmoil. Later, he became a Catholic missionary in Africa and witnessed religious and, sadly, military turmoil. Ever driven forward, however, he didn’t stop there. With deep respect for Pope Francis and the Dalai Lama, he wrote three books over quarantine.

Who’s joining on Wednesday?

Professor Christoph Schwöbel is Professor of Systematic Theology and 1643 Chair of Divinity at St Mary’s College of the University of St Andrews. Previously, he held chairs at Kiel, Heidelburg, and Tübingen universities.

An extraordinarily humble and easy-going man, he is in fact a giant. As a colleague of his informed us: ‘Christoph decided to come to Britain after having attained every position of significance in German theology.’ Ordained in the Lutheran Church, he publishes in English and German (already with over 300 published works).

We arrange for a couple of respected professors to sit down and have a chat, with each other, with you, and with us. We ask undergraduates of every stripe to join in. (Could be fun!)

It's not a lecture or a panel. There is no topic assigned, prepared, defended. But it is online (you can sneak out early).

For us, our name recalls the old formality of gown-wearing and then questions that rigid, structured academia. Our open table conversations give us all a chance to see academia without the classroom formality.
Thus, we say we set aside the gowns and their formality and have a conversation.
