The children excitedly dipped the conkers they had collected over the last few weeks into autumn coloured paints and rolled them onto paper.

“You rolled it!” 🙌🏼

“Look at that red mark!” 🔴

“The conker went fast!” 🌰 💨

This activity encourages children with the following steps;

🌰Develop develop fine motor control. 🌰Hand–eye coordination.
🌰Sensory awareness.
🌰Creativity.
🌰Problem-solving and an understanding of cause and effect.
🌰Supporting language and early mathematical concepts.

There was lots of discussion around the table, here’s what we asked…..

🟠 “What colour is this?”
🟤 “Can you roll it?”
🟡 “Where did it go?”
🟢 “Can you find the conker?”
🔴 “Is it fast or slow?”
🟠 “What happens when you roll it?”
🟤 “Do you like this colour?”
🟡 “Can you see the marks?”
🟢 “Shall we try another colour?”
🔴 “Can you touch the paint?”
🟠 “What does it feel like?”
🟤 “Can you make it roll again?”

This is definitely going to be how we spend our autumn 🍂 🌰🍃🍁 🌳

Children love autumn, especially searching for conkers and playing among the fallen leaves and we had the added bonus of rain so we did lots of splashing in puddles!! 💦 ☔️

We finished off the morning at the park! 🛝

🍂 🍁 🍃 Our Autumn Trail 🍃🍁🍂

This is our favourite season of all!

Talking to the children about the changes autumn brings and giving them opportunities to ask questions and show them what happens during this time.

We looked at the different colours of the fallen leaves, sizes and shapes 🍁🍃🍂

The children were so kind, taking turns, sharing and helping each other find new treasures.

🍂Why do you think the leaves change colour and fall off the trees?

🍃 Why do some trees keep their leaves?

🍁Who might live in the fallen leaves?

We were very lucky to see two squirrels too 🐿️ 🐿️

“Let’s make a nest for the baby owls.”

We searched for sticks and leaves 🍃 🍂 to help make a cosy little nest 🪹 The children explored the textures and put the owls 🦉 inside.

“Can you fly like an owl?” 🦉

We encouraged the children to flap their arms and move around.

🦉“Fly, little owl!”

🦉 “Fly high!”

🦉 “Fly low!”

🦉 “Come back to the nest!”

🦉 “Hoot hoot!”

The owls were very tired after a busy morning so we put the baby owls back into their cosy nest for a cuddle.

🍂🍃🍂🍃🍂🍃🍂🍃🍂🍃🍂🍃🍂🍃

The children enjoyed exploring the outdoors and discovering the changes that autumn brings. They searched for colourful fallen leaves and conkers, carefully picking them up and examining their different shapes, colours, textures and sizes. They enjoyed collecting their treasures and sharing their discoveries with one another, developing their curiosity, language and understanding of the natural world through hands-on exploration.
