It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Councillor Roger Jackson, who sadly passed away at home this morning following his long and courageous battle with cancer. He represented the Southwell Division on Nottinghamshire County Council and was a huge supporter of The Minster School.
Our paths crossed during the Covid lockdown, where he helped support the MSPTA to fundraise for a trim trail to brighten the junior school's modest play area.
More recently, he was also instrumental in helping us to secure a climbing wall for our main school. Despite being poorly, he would always answer the phone and chat, and he came to see us for the unveiling.
In the wider community, Roger was crucial in securing a number of important improvements, including the £26million flood storage reservoir scheme in Lowdham, as well as a Southwell Flood Alleviation Scheme, and a £1million feasibility study into junction improvements at Gunthorpe.
He worked hard to secure highway improvements including a pedestrian crossing at Bulcote, resurfacing of the A612 to Lowdham, the A6097 Epperstone Road/Lowdham Road, resurfacing of Gunthorpe Main Street and resurfacing of Nottingham Road near Southwell Leisure Centre.
These projects are a lasting testament to Roger’s determination to get things done and improve the lives of the people he represented.
Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies are with Roger’s wife, Jilly, his family and his colleagues at Nottinghamshire County Council at this incredibly difficult time.
Rest in peace Roger. You have fought the good fight and your legacy lives on. ❤️
