Alleyn Court is a co-educational preparatory school for boys and girls on the outskirts of Southend-on-Sea. Family owned by the Wilcox family from its formation in 1904 until 2015, when the school was gifted to a charitable trust, Alleyn Court still has a strong family atmosphere and an excellent reputation. The Headmaster is a member of both IAPS and ISA and these are hallmarks of the quality offered by the school. The school prides itself on the breadth of curriculum and opportunities offered for children’s development, with high academic standards a major feature and PE and games, art, music, drama and French all integral to the curriculum. These are all supported and enriched through an extensive extra-curricular programme.

What a way to finish another amazing week! 🏊‍♀️🏊‍♂️

This afternoon, Years 4 to 6 set off from school, walking across the golf course and through the countryside for one of those Alleyn Court traditions we always look forward to… our 15th annual Swimming Gala.

There was some seriously fast swimming, several records broken and plenty of determination in the pool. But just as good to see was everything happening around it: pupils cheering each other on, celebrating one another’s successes and making sure everyone had support from the side.

Competition, camaraderie and a lot of school spirit - a brilliant afternoon and a fitting end to another wonderful week at Alleyn Court. 💙💗

And just like that, September is over. 💙💗

The first month of a new school year has brought plenty with it at Alleyn Court.

We’ve welcomed children back into classrooms, watched our youngest pupils begin their Alleyn Court journey, returned to the forest school and sports fields, started rehearsals, competed, created, explored and tried plenty of new things.

September has also seen the launch of our new Alleyn Award, giving children even more opportunities to discover, create, explore, contribute, lead and thrive throughout their time here.

There have been new beginnings too - new children and families joining our community, an exciting new chapter under Mrs Lewington’s leadership, and lots happening as we continue to make an Alleyn Court childhood the very best it can be.

70 runners. 26 schools. One very proud Alleyn Court team. 💙💗

Following last week’s Southend Cross Country, the full team results are now in... and there is plenty to celebrate!

Our KS1 team finished 3rd in the Borough, with KS2 finishing 4th overall. A fantastic result in a field of 26 schools, and particularly impressive for one of the smaller schools competing.

There were some brilliant year-group results, with many of our runners having qualified for the County Finals too:

🥇 Year 2 Girls - Borough Champions
🥈 Year 2 Boys - Silver
🥈 Year 3 Girls - Silver
🥉 Year 5 Boys - Bronze

There were medals and qualifications to celebrate, but also determination, resilience and plenty of encouragement for teammates all the way to the finish.

A brilliant afternoon of school sport. Well done to every one of our runners! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

It started with a story… 🍂

This week, Nursery have been exploring 'The Leaf Thief' and today, the story became the starting point for a little creativity of their own.

Using different materials and techniques, the children created their own squirrels: making choices, experimenting with texture and colour, developing fine motor skills and, importantly, discovering that there is more than one way to create something.

Because a story in Nursery is rarely just a story.

It can spark a conversation, inspire a question, lead to an investigation or become the beginning of something entirely new.

And we rather love that no two squirrels turned out quite the same. 🐿️

What has the owl eaten?

After learning about owls, Year 2 put their knowledge into practice by carefully dissecting a real regurgitated owl pellet, sourced by Mrs Woodcock.

Using tweezers and identification charts, the children uncovered tiny bones and worked together to identify what the owl may have eaten.

A wonderfully hands-on lesson filled with curiosity, careful observation and some very excited young scientists.

Essex finals bound!

A brilliant day of table tennis for Alleyn Court.

Our U11 boys secured silver, losing only to eventual winners Hamstel, and qualified to represent Southend at the Essex County Finals.

Our girls, competing in their first table tennis competition, showed tremendous courage and determination to finish fourth.

A proud day for every pupil who represented the school. Congratulations to both teams.

Every creative journey can begin with a single dot.

To celebrate International Dot Day, every child at Alleyn Court designed their own unique dot for a vibrant whole-school display outside our art room.

Each design reflects a different idea, personality and creative approach, coming together to form one wonderfully colourful celebration of imagination and individuality.

International Dot Day encourages children to make their mark, embrace their creativity and have confidence in their own ideas. We loved seeing how every pupil interpreted the same simple starting point in a completely different way.

Learning from the very best 🏐

What an opportunity for our young netballers, who spent the afternoon with Brie Grierson of Nottingham Forest Netball and Jamaica Netball for a very special masterclass.

From drills and match play to plenty of questions, our pupils had the chance to learn first-hand from an elite international player, hearing about Brie’s experiences, developing their own skills and discovering a little more about what it takes to compete at the highest level.

And there was one particularly special moment: getting to hold Brie’s Commonwealth silver medal. 🥈

A brilliant afternoon of sport, curiosity and inspiration, finished with autographs and plenty of smiles.

A huge thank you to Brie for giving our pupils such a memorable experience, and perhaps inspiring a few dreams along the way. 💙💗

Sport for all. Challenge for many. Excellence for those ready to pursue it.

What does a day in Reception look like?

It looks like stories that spark questions, practical activities that turn ideas into discoveries and outdoor experiences that give curious minds space to explore.

It looks like learning to share, communicate, persevere and proudly say, “I did it!”

At Alleyn Court, Reception provides strong foundations for future learning while protecting the curiosity, creativity and sense of wonder that make these early years so special.

Children begin developing early literacy and mathematical understanding alongside the wider experiences that enrich school life. They learn through exploration, movement, creativity, friendships and carefully supported challenges, within an environment where their progress is understood and celebrated.

Families also benefit from wraparound care from 7.30am until 6.00pm, helping school life work more comfortably around family life.

Reception is not simply preparation for what comes next. It is an important and memorable year in its own right.
