Last week, students across the school took part in the national Restart a Heart livestream, learning vital skills in CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

The 30-minute session gave students the opportunity to practise chest compressions and develop the confidence and knowledge that could one day help them save a life.

A huge thank you to all the staff and students who took part, particularly at such short notice. Initiatives such as this are an important part of equipping our young people with practical skills that can make a real difference in an emergency.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

Our annual Model United Nations Conference brought together around 200 students from Years 10–13, alongside a small number of students from Years 8 and 9, for a day of debate, diplomacy and critical thinking.

Representing different international perspectives, students explored real-world issues across a range of councils, including the UN Security Council, Human Rights Council, NATO and the UN Environment Assembly.

After weeks of preparation, students put their research, public speaking and negotiation skills into practice, culminating in an emergency scenario during the afternoon session.

A huge thank you to all the staff who supported the event and helped make it such a success. We were incredibly proud to see our students engaging so confidently and thoughtfully with complex global issues.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

We are delighted to celebrate Jamie’s successful participation in the German Pupil Courses 2025.

Following his time in Germany, Jamie not only wrote a report about his experience but also visited a local primary school to share his experiences with younger pupils, helping them to develop their linguistic and intercultural understanding.

Jamie has been presented with a certificate recognising his active involvement in the programme and his valuable post-programme contribution.

We would also like to thank Mrs Cavalier for encouraging our pupils to apply for this fantastic opportunity and for supporting Jamie with his application.

Well done, Jamie, for making the most of this opportunity and sharing your experience with others.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

It was fantastic to welcome our new Sixth Form students to our annual Freshers’ Fair in the Main Hall.

With an impressive range of clubs, societies and activities on offer, the fair gave students the opportunity to discover new interests, meet like-minded students and find out more about the many opportunities available beyond the classroom.

From Physics, Biology, Maths and Science Societies to Debating, Law, Film Club, Robotics, Chess, Music, eSports, DofE and many more, there was something for everyone.

A particular thank you to our current Sixth Form students who helped run the stalls and shared their experiences with our new students. Their enthusiasm and first-hand insight helped make the event such a welcoming introduction to Sixth Form life at SHSB.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

We were proud to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our Key Stage 3 students across all forms and subjects at our recent Prizegiving celebration.

It was a wonderful opportunity to recognise the hard work, commitment and success of our students throughout the year.

Thank you to the Chair of the Old Southendian Association for presenting the awards, and to the Association for their continued generosity in sponsoring this annual event.

Congratulations to all our prize winners on their achievements.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

Last term, we were delighted to welcome pupils from a local primary school to Southend High School for Boys for a special Bee Experience Day.

The visit provided pupils with an opportunity to learn more about honey bees, pollination and the importance of pollinators, while also experiencing practical beekeeping in the school’s apiary.

Following an introduction to bees and beekeeping, pupils learned about bee colonies, honey production and apiary safety before getting suited up in protective clothing. In small groups, and under the close supervision of our experienced beekeepers, they entered the apiary to observe and assist with a hive inspection.

The pupils were able to see brood, pollen and nectar stores, observe bee behaviour and, where possible, look for the queen bee. While groups took turns in the apiary, other pupils took part in supervised bee-related educational activities.
The visit was a valuable opportunity for pupils to develop their understanding of the natural world through a practical experience, while learning more about the vital role bees play in our environment.

We were very pleased to welcome our young visitors to SHSB and hope that the experience inspired a lasting interest in bees, biodiversity and environmental sustainability.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

For more than two decades, Barb has been a familiar and friendly face in our Sixth Form Centre, greeting students with a smile and helping to make lunchtime a welcoming part of the school day.

We are delighted to congratulate Barb, from our catering partners Caterlink, on receiving an award recognising an incredible 22 years of dedicated service.

Thank you, Barb, for everything you do for our school community. Your commitment, kindness and hard work are truly appreciated. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

Last term on one of the hottest days of the school year, our Year 7 students rose to the challenge during their Maths Enrichment Day.

Using their mathematical knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills, students took part in a range of exciting activities, including Maths in Magic, Maths in Codebreaking and Maths in Architecture.

They worked together to recreate Mr Dowding’s magic tricks, cracked codes to solve a murder mystery, and put their engineering skills to the test by designing and building their own stable structures.

A fantastic day of collaboration, curiosity and discovering the many ways that maths can be applied beyond the classroom.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.

Music, memories and generosity came together for a fantastic evening at the OSA Summer Music Festival, held at The Boundary, Garon Park.

We were delighted to see some of our talented school musicians, including the celebrated SHSB Big Band, perform alongside the outstanding Old Southendian Big Band, whose members represent generations of former SHSB instrumentalists. The standard of musicianship throughout the evening was simply phenomenal and showcased the enduring musical tradition of our school community.

The charity dinner-dance was not only a wonderful celebration of music but also an incredible success in supporting the school, raising an amazing £6,475.

Our sincere thanks go to the Old Southendian Association, everyone who performed, organised and volunteered, and all those who attended and supported the event. Your generosity and continued commitment to the school are greatly appreciated.

What a wonderful example of past and present members of the SHSB community coming together through music to support future generations.

With courage and determination, nothing is impossible.
