We take pride in supporting our learners and settings, but one of our biggest achievements is supporting our staff 💫

We're delighted that from January, Amy Grant is taking on an expanded role, Head of Functional Skills and Inclusive Learning. Amy will continue to run the functional skills side of VTS, but is now going to be playing an active role in ensuring all learning is inclusive 🌀

Amy will continue to liaise with learners, and work closely with Tutors to ensure quality assurance. Her role will provide particular assistance to SEND learners, those with English as an additional language, and other challenges that may cause barriers to learning. This dedicated role will provide structure and assurance all round

If you'd like to know more about the support Amy can offer, please speak with your Tutor - and we wish Amy the best of luck for her new role 🧡

Appraisal season is here… what’s next for your team? 🧡

For many managers, Autumn is a time for appraisals, reflecting on progress and setting new goals for the months ahead

And when you’re setting those all-important SMART targets, it’s worth asking:

🍁 Is there an area where this person could build their confidence?
🍂 Would some additional training strengthen their knowledge?
🍁 Is there a skill they’d like to develop as part of their progression?

A SMART target doesn’t have to mean a huge qualification or months of study

➡️ Some focused CPD can be a practical, achievable way to support professional development, while bringing new knowledge and ideas back into your setting

At VTS, we offer online training designed with the needs of the care and early years sectors in mind, including our Wellbeing Webinars and Caring for Babies courses.

So, if training comes up in this year’s appraisal conversations, take a look at what’s available and turn that development goal into action

How much screen-time is too much? 💻

It's a divisive area and one that comes with personal opinion as well as more and more research

The Department for Education has guidelines in place to assist early years' settings and the revised EYFS 2026 requires providers to have regard to the DFE’s screen-use guidance

So what do they suggest? ⤵

🔶 Your setting should be able to demonstrate that you have considered the guidance and have a thoughtful and consistent approach to screen use.
🔷 Under 2s: avoid screen use.
🔶 Ages 2-5: up to 1 hour a day, but this should be used carefully and intentionally for specific learning and development reasons.
🔷 There should be a clear reason for using a screen and it should contribute to the child’s learning and development.

You can see more information on their website, allowing you to continue enriching the learning of the children in your setting 📲

Thank you to everyone who submitted nominations for their Student of the Month 🏆

We carefully considered all of the entries and decided that this month's winner is 🥁🥁🥁

🌟 Amber Marley 🌟

Amber is currently studying her Early Years Lead Practitioner Level 5

Jade, Amber's tutor said "Amber has been a stand out learner from the moment I signed her up, throughout her level five she has had high quality work and really wants to develop her knowledge and skills. Amber has implemented changes across the setting and school and been able to take her new knowledge to the head teacher to implement policy changes. Amber has a wonderful approach with the children; she has been able to demonstrate high quality practice across her team and not only implements changes but also works with the team to ensure they have a say."

This is fantastic and Amber should be very proud 👏

If you think that your staff member deserves to be our Student of The Month, please fill out the form in our newsletter and let us know. Or, if you're not signed up, speak to the VTS tutor that visits your workplace, or message us to be added to our mailing list 📲

We talk a lot about what we do, but sometimes it's good to open the door and welcome you in so you can see for yourselves 👀

Here is a sneak peek into what our tutors get up to when visiting our Early Years settings 👶

Jade is at Nanna's Day Nursery in Colchester having a general catch up with Area Manager Abi, and spending time with learners. Our face to face approach is what really sets us apart: our tutors build up a personal relationship with learners and we feel this has a huge impact on their journey 🔹

We love receiving positive feedback from our settings and our learners - and we're proud to say we get emails and letters like this each and every month 🙌

This feedback was from Rascals Day Nursery, about Tutor Charlotte.

"Charlotte has been amazing, she is always on hand for support and answers any questions that the apprentice or nursery management ask. Charlotte worked with the team to organise appointments and exams."

Thank you for taking the time to send us your kind words, and well done to Charlotte for a job well done 💙

Partnership in action 💪

We believe the best apprenticeship experiences are created when training providers and employers work closely together, supporting apprentices from day one and throughout their journey

Jane Ling and Claire Millington recently joined the team at Second Steps Hatfield Peverel for an induction session welcoming their apprentices and helping them take the next step in their Early Years careers 🙌

It was a fantastic example of what we can achieve by working in partnership. The Second Steps team introduced the apprentices to the EYFS, enabling environments, their curriculum and approach, safeguarding and the induction process, even getting everyone involved in making playdough!

Jane and Claire then introduced the apprentices to VTS and our face-to-face approach to learning, covering what to expect from their apprenticeship, End-Point Assessment, Functional Skills, enrichment and the wider skills that can help them grow in confidence both personally and professionally 📈

There was also a very personal connection to share: both Jane and Claire began their own journeys as VTS apprentices, progressing in their Early Years careers before becoming tutors with VTS. It was a great opportunity to show the new apprentices just where their own qualifications and experience could take them.

A huge thank you to Kiara Worsell, Shelley Ward, Louise Silk and the whole Second Steps team for welcoming us and for continuing to work so closely with VTS 🙏

And, of course, congratulations to the apprentices pictured with their certificates of attendance!

Days like this are a great reminder that apprenticeships work best when everyone is working towards the same goal.

We’re proud to work in partnership with employers like Second Steps to develop the next generation of Early Years professionals. Feel free to get in touch if you'd like to discuss how we can work in partnership with your setting

If you're looking for a new career path and you're a school leaver or the parent of a school leaver, we would always recommend considering a career in the care sector 💙

It's a career that is going to promise longevity, career progression, and it's incredibly rewarding. And despite the misconception that it's just about working in residential care homes, there's so many more opportunities depending on your skills and interests

Here Emma talks about some of the reasons why you might consider a career in Care 🙌

We deliver Level 2 Adult Care Worker, Level 3 Lead Adult Care Worker and Level 5 Leader in Adult Care Apprenticeships, as well as a variety of Short Courses to enable continuous learning and upskilling. We're passionate about helping support the next generation of care givers and would love to hear from your setting if you'd like help attracting and retaining great carers
