More classes. More people getting stronger. And plenty of laughs along the way.

That’s what I love seeing at Hengistbury Head Outdoors.

Different ages, different abilities and different reasons for turning up — but everyone is there to move, get stronger and enjoy themselves.

No pressure to keep up with anyone else. You work at your level, challenge yourself and hopefully leave feeling a little better than when you arrived.

And with more classes now running at HHO, there are even more opportunities to come along and be part of it.

Getting stronger doesn’t have to be serious all the time. It can actually be good fun. Hengistbury Head Outdoors

Age isn’t a reason to avoid strength training.

In fact, it’s probably one of the best reasons to start.

As we get older, strength becomes about so much more than lifting weights. It’s about staying capable, keeping our independence and having the confidence to keep doing the things we enjoy.

That’s exactly what Age Strong at Hengistbury Head Outdoors is about.

A friendly group of people over 50, all at different levels, getting stronger together — and having a good laugh while we do it.

You don’t need to be fit to start.
You don’t need any experience.
You just need to turn up.

You’re not too old to start. You’re too important not to.

Come along and see what the Age Strong community is all about.

Getting older is inevitable. Getting old is a little more negotiable.

We can’t change the number on our birth certificate, but we can influence many of the signals we send our body every day.

Too little movement.
Too much time alone.
Losing our curiosity.
Having nothing to work towards.
Allowing every day to become the same.

None of these help us age well.

But here’s the good bit — we can change them.

Keep learning something new.
Get outside in the daylight.
Spend time with people who make you feel good.
Have something that gives you purpose.
And most importantly for me — keep moving and keep getting stronger.

You don’t need to train like you did at 25.

You just need to keep giving your body a reason to remain capable at 50, 60, 70 and beyond.

That’s really what Age Strong is about.

Not trying to stop ageing.

Making sure we’re still able to enjoy life while we’re doing it.

What’s one thing you could change today that your future self might thank you for?

A little milestone yesterday.

I chest-pressed 10kg.

That might not sound like much, but after six months of shoulder trouble, it felt pretty bloody good.

Just a few short sets, with the wife spotting me and making sure I behaved myself. Still, it’s another step forward.

A few months ago, 1kg hurt. Then 2.5kg felt like a huge win.

Yesterday, it was 10kg.

Recovery feels painfully slow day to day, but looking back shows how far you’ve come.

Still a long way to go.

But 10kg is 10kg — and I’ll take it.

Progress isn’t always about where you are. It’s about how far you’ve come.

What small win has felt pretty bloody big to you lately?

Six months ago, I couldn’t press anything.

Four months ago, pressing ½–1kg felt like progress.

Two months ago, pressing 2.5kg nearly brought tears to my eyes.

Today, I’m still struggling to press 10kg.

What makes it interesting is that I can now deadlift more than my bodyweight and squat a reasonable amount of weight.

It’s a reminder of just how different movements can be when you’re recovering from a shoulder injury. My pulling strength has come back well, but pressing through the shoulder is still a completely different story.

Still, when I look back at where I was six months ago, getting close to 10kg is progress.

The best part is training with my wife.

She spots me, encourages me and genuinely wants me to succeed. While I’m rebuilding my own strength, I’m incredibly proud watching how strong she has become over the last couple of years since starting weight training.

At the moment, she’s definitely the stronger presser in the family.

I’m working on it. 😂

Progress isn’t always about what you can lift today.

Sometimes, it’s about remembering what you couldn’t lift before—and realising how far you’ve come.

Six-month check-up with the surgeon today and all going well with the shoulder recovery.

It’s been a long six months, and there’s still work to do, but I’m gradually getting back to proper training and starting to trust the shoulder again.

Then a training session with the wife…

She’s still lifting more weight than me and, to add insult to injury, she’s now spotting me on my measly presses. 😂

Not quite where I want to be yet, but compared to where I was six months ago, I’ll take it.

I even got a happy ending😘

Progress is progress. Keep turning up.

It’s easy to stick with what feels comfortable.

The problem is, comfortable doesn’t always move us forward.

Getting stronger means doing things that sometimes feel a little difficult, unfamiliar or even intimidating.

But every time you have a go, you prove to yourself that you CAN do more than you thought.

You don’t have to be brilliant at it.

You don’t have to do everything at once.

Just start somewhere and keep going.

That’s how we keep ourselves strong, capable and able to enjoy life.

That’s what Age Strong is all about 💪🏼
