The Solent is one of the best places to learn, but it is also one of the best places to realise how much good training matters.
Changing tides, busy traffic, open water, marinas, moorings and weather that does not always follow the forecast all give you real experience, not just classroom theory.
That is what makes practical tuition so valuable.
At Ocean Sports Tuition, RYA training is focused on helping people become safer, more capable and more confident on the water. Whether you are taking your first steps with Powerboat Level 2 or building towards more advanced qualifications, the aim is the same: proper skills that stay with you long after the course ends.

Still need to sort your Isle of Wight Festival travel?
Southampton Boat Charter is running skippered RIB transfers from Ocean Village Marina, just a short trip from Southampton train station, taking you across the Solent to the Island.
Depending on tides, you’ll arrive at either Island Harbour, around a 10-minute walk from the festival entrance, or East Cowes, where you can continue by taxi or shuttle bus.
Transfers are available across the festival dates, with return options too, including late-night returns on selected evenings.
Fast, fun and far more exciting than the usual ferry queue.

Fog, darkness, poor visibility, heavy traffic and changing weather can quickly make navigation more demanding. In those moments, knowing how to read and use radar properly can make a real difference to decision-making on board.
Our RYA Radar Course is designed to help you move beyond the basics.
Using a purpose-built radar simulator, this one-day course gives you the chance to practise realistic scenarios in a controlled environment, including restricted visibility, collision avoidance and equipment challenges.
It is practical, focused and built around the situations you may actually face on the water.
For anyone looking to improve their navigation skills and make safer, more confident decisions at sea, this is a valuable course to have under your belt.

Radar is not just a useful bit of kit to have on board.
If it is fitted and operational, you need to know how to use it properly.
Our latest blog looks at why radar training matters from both a safety and legal point of view, including how COLREGS Rules 5, 7 and 19 apply to vessels with radar fitted.
It is not enough to simply switch the screen on. Skippers need to understand how to interpret the display, track targets, assess collision risk and make safe decisions, especially in poor visibility, at night or in busy waters.
The RYA Radar Course gives boat owners and skippers practical simulator-based training to build that understanding in a controlled environment.

All eyes on a healthy ocean this .
For us, the ocean is more than a place to train. It is where confidence grows, skills develop and people learn to enjoy boating safely and responsibly.
As an RYA training centre based in Southampton and out on the Solent, we believe good seamanship includes respecting the water we use. From safe handling and navigation to awareness of the marine environment, every trip is a chance to look after our blue spaces.
This World Ocean Day 2026, with the focus on strong marine protected areas, we’re supporting the call to protect what remains, restore what has been lost and help future generations enjoy a thriving ocean.
