Congratulations to Dr. Katherine Kwa, who has won the Dyson Sustainability Award (third prize) at this year’s “STEM for BRITAIN” event held in Parliament! “STEM for BRITAIN” is a coveted scientific poster competition and exhibition highlighting the exceptional work of early-career researchers at Universities nationwide.
Dr Kwa is a Research Fellow in Offshore Renewable Energy in the School of Engineering at Southampton, and her entry concentrated on the use of enhanced whole-life anchoring systems for offshore floating devices. This innovatively emphasised ways of bettering anchoring systems by incorporating advantages of sea-bed anchor effects into their design. This allows the offshore industry to take up enhanced anchor design more easily. The adoption and development of offshore floating devices is crucial for both gathering clean renewable energy, enabling us to better meet global demand for electricity, and generate new fuels to succeed hydrocarbons. Many energetic locations are situated a long distance from shore in tough environments, making effective anchoring systems vital for supporting floating devices, their future, and the infrastructural longevity of offshore renewable energy.
“STEM for BRITAIN”’ is arranged by the Parliamentary and Scientific Committee. It acknowledges exemplary research that contributes towards a sustainable future, which is spotlighted to Members of the two Houses of Parliament. Dr. Kwa’s accomplishments hold relevance to progress towards several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 7 – ensuring our energy systems are sustainable. Furthermore, the innovation of systems for floating devices such as that demonstrated by Dr. Kwa could help us to achieve Net Zero, essential to tackling global warming. Advancing the generation of offshore renewable energy also forms a central component of the UK government’s 'Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution'.
