Learning doesn’t have to look the same for every child. 💛

One of the lovely things about working with home-educated children is having the freedom to build learning around the individual child — their interests, their strengths and the areas where they need a little more support.

Daytime Reading Doctor sessions are completely personalised and can include:

📚 Reading and comprehension
✏️ Spelling and writing
🔤 Phonics and word work
🎲 Multisensory games and activities
💻 Face-to-face or online support

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. We can slow things down, revisit gaps, follow an interest or simply find a different way to make something click.

From Matilda and The BFG to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl's stories have been part of children's reading lives for generations.

One of the things I love about his books is that they remind us that reading can be funny, ridiculous, mischievous and completely unexpected.

And that matters.

Not every book a child reads needs to stretch their reading level or teach them something. Sometimes the best book is simply the one that makes them want to keep turning the pages. 💛

What if you could actually travel through the pages of a story? 📖✨
One of my favourite little discoveries at Disneyland Paris — Le Pays des Contes de Fées, a boat ride through miniature worlds inspired by stories and fairytales.
Castles, villages, dragons and adventures… all beginning with a story. ❤️
Because that really is the magic of reading — it can take you anywhere. 📚✨

🔤 Sound of the Week: OA

This week's sound is oa, as in boat, coat, goat and road.

At The Reading Doctor, we use lots of different ways to practise sounds and spelling patterns. Children might build words, move letters, use sound buttons, play games or write — helping learning become something they do, rather than simply something they have to remember.

🏠 Try it at home: Car Park Words 🚗

Write a selection of oa words on pieces of paper and spread them out like parking spaces.

Call out a word and ask your child to drive a toy car to the correct one and park!

Learning doesn't need to involve worksheets — sometimes a toy car and a few scraps of paper are all you need. 💛
