Molecular fossils reveal secrets of Earth’s recovery from ancient global warming event 18/06/2026

Our scientists have uncovered new evidence from one of Earth’s most extreme ancient warming events.

Molecular fossils revealed secrets behind how Earth recovered from one of its most extreme global warming events millions of years ago. The revelations give insights into how the climate may recover long after human-driven carbon dioxide emissions stop.

Antarctica sea ice collapse driven by triple whammy of climate chaos 11/05/2026

For decades Antarctica defied global warming trends - until 2015 when everything changed ❄️

New research by our academics has uncovered a "triple-whammy" of climate chaos that flipped the Southern Ocean out of balance.

Nutrient imbalance may drive coral disease more than heat stress 06/05/2026

Our scientists have discovered an imbalance of nutrients in seawater can cause destructive diseases in corals 🪸

Their research at the Coral Reef Lab shows it could be driving infection more than the heat stress from warming oceans.

Fin whales reduce their calls by as much as 50% during seismic surveys, our researchers have found.

They are worried the surveys, which are used to find oil and gas, could impact whales' ability to communicate, navigate and forage.

Ancient rocks reveal annual climate cycles during Snowball Earth 09/02/2026

Hundreds of millions of years ago our planet was frozen, in a state called Snowball Earth. Researchers have uncovered evidence from ancient rocks which show how the climate would have fluctuated during one of the coldest periods in Earth’s history.

Professor John Marshall has spent the last 30 years exploring the Arctic, living and working in remote camps in extreme conditions.

In the New Year’s Honours List, John was awarded The Polar Medal in recognition of his outstanding achievements in polar research, which has included discovering new evidence of some of the world’s first forests and four-legged animals and a mass extinction event over 360 million years ago.

Listen to our podcast with John to find out more about his research - and what it's really like living and working in the Arctic.
