The Bristol 188 was an experimental British high-speed research aircraft developed in the 1950s to explore the challenges of sustained supersonic flight and heat-resistant materials, a vital step toward future high-speed aircraft and missile designs.

Built by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, the 188 was nicknamed the “Flaming Pencil” for its long, slender fuselage and stainless-steel construction. It was powered by two de Havilland Gyron Junior turbojets, capable of pushing the aircraft past Mach 2, though in testing it only achieved around Mach 1.88.

The aircraft’s primary mission was to study aerodynamic heating, the extreme thermal stress that occurs on airframes at supersonic speeds. Its stainless-steel skin and specialized cooling systems were experimental for their time and later informed designs like the Concorde and English Electric Lightning.

However, the 188 suffered from limited range, engine overheating, and maintenance difficulties, which prevented it from reaching its full potential. Only two prototypes flew, beginning in 1962, before the program was cancelled in 1964.

Question of the day:

Why does the AOA of a propellor blade normally decrease towards the tip?

a) Because the tip travels faster, and blade twist helps maintain more uniform lift along the blade
b) Because the tip travels slower, and a lower AOA prevents excessive drag
c) Because the blade root produces no thrust and must operate at the highest AOA
