Study to explore health and wellbeing benefits of Isle of Wight’s outdoor spaces 08/04/2026

A new study will explore the health and wellbeing benefits of the Isle of Wight's outdoor spaces.

Working with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, researchers will survey visitors to 'green' and 'blue' sites to better understand how people are using these spaces and what it is about them that produces benefits.

🌍 Research Insight

How do colonial histories and racial inequalities shape nature finance today?

Michael Lomotey (Geography and Environmental Science) has co-authored a report with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), exploring the ongoing impacts of coloniality and racial injustice in environmental funding systems.

The report highlights how structural inequalities continue to influence how nature-based finance is designed and delivered.

Research Spotlight

What happens when we don’t know where people are?

This research uses geospatial data, including satellite and mobile data, to map populations where traditional data is missing.

By filling these gaps, researchers can help ensure people are included in decision-making and better supported.

Prof. Andrew Tatem has been recognised as a Highly Cited Researcher (2025) by Clarivate, an acknowledgement of researchers whose work ranks in the top 1% by citations in their field and demonstrates significant global influence.

🎓 Inaugural Lecture Today.

Professor Andrew Power from the School of Geography and Environmental Science will deliver his inaugural lecture today.

His research explores the “geographies of care”, how homes, communities and everyday spaces shape how care is delivered and experienced.

His work highlights that care can both support and constrain people’s lives, particularly for disabled individuals navigating everyday spaces.

It was an insightful and thought-provoking lecture.

PhD researcher Emily Cole from the School of Geography and Environmental Science is studying how local governments make land-use decisions in the context of climate change.

Working with local authorities in Hampshire, her research explores how renewable energy infrastructure can be developed while protecting biodiversity and green spaces. These local decisions play an important role in helping the UK reach its net-zero emissions target by 2050.
