Duke of Edinburgh Expedition – New Forest Challenge
Last weekend, two groups of students took on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Expedition section in the beautiful New Forest.
The Expedition section is designed to challenge young people both physically and mentally. Students must plan and complete a journey on foot, covering significant distances each day, while being fully self-sufficient. This means navigating using maps and compasses, carrying all their equipment, setting up camp, cooking their own meals, and working effectively as a team.
Our students have been training hard since Christmas, developing key skills including:
🧭 Navigation using maps and compasses
⛺ Camp craft, including pitching tents and cooking safely
🤝 Teamwork and communication
💪 Resilience and determination when things got tough
Over the weekend, they walked over 12 km per day, camped overnight, and faced challenging conditions that really tested their preparation and perseverance. It was an incredibly demanding experience, but the students rose to the challenge and should be extremely proud of themselves.
A big thank you to Mr. Day and Miss. Mair-Morgan for supporting and encouraging the groups.
👏 Well done to all involved – a real demonstration of commitment, resilience, and teamwork. We are very proud of you all!

Dame Kelly Homes Project Update:
A fantastic group of our students have been taking part in an inspiring project with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust. Over a number of sessions, they have been working closely with our athlete mentor Linvoy Primus, to build confidence, motivation and resilience — and to challenge themselves to step outside their comfort zones.
As part of the programme, students designed their own social action project. They chose to support a local care home, taking full ownership of the process: planning activities, pricing resources, and pitching for funding to bring their ideas to life.
On Monday, those plans became reality. Our students visited the care home and spent time with residents, enjoying card and board games, bingo, armchair athletics with balloons, walks around the garden, making teas and coffees, handing out biscuits, and — most importantly — sitting and chatting.
While many students felt understandably nervous beforehand, they showed real resilience, overcame their fears, and embraced the experience wholeheartedly. The result was a truly special afternoon. Residents loved the company and were full of praise for the students’ kindness, confidence and genuine engagement.
We couldn’t be prouder of how our students represented themselves and our school!
