Some folks are okay with 2 k***s on a bass. Other guys need 14. In 1978, Hamer built a "Quad Bass." It is a 12-string, and the reason for all the k***s? It's quadraphonic. There is a pickup for each group of strings. Seymour Duncan was asked to build a pickup with four outputs, and the end result were pickups best described as "half-Strat." Each group of strings had its own treble boost/cut and volume along with a switch to select EQ frequency. Technically, every k**b and switch you see *is* functional.
