You’re approaching this junction in the UK. The traffic ahead is moving slowly, and you can see a gap on the other side.

When approaching a roundabout like this, always use all the information that’s given to you. Yes, both the 2nd and 3rd lanes are signed towards Fareham (F’HAM) but you need to plan a bit more about the situation ahead.
-
It’s normally cited that ‘left is best’ which is often the case as left lane is your driving lane and right is for overtaking. If you look ahead to where the red line is though and there’s congestion at the 2nd exit of the roundabout it may be more beneficial to choose lane 3 on the approach to reach Fareham and then merge back to the left later on.

These roundabouts can often seem confusing to newer drivers but all the information you need is signed and marked in some way or another. Just remember to keep an eye on traffic lights and surrounding vehicles as that can easily catch you out if all you focus on is lane position!

This one got people’s blood boiling with disagreement 🥵

So I posted this the other week asking who would have the priority, red or blue? The responses and opinions were heavily divided 😬

Now, my 2 pence for those who want it is this. Blue 🚙 is pulling out of a minor road so naturally needs to give way to the traffic they’re joining and ensure it’s safe before entering the new road. Makes complete sense.

Red 🚘 car is turning right from a major road into a minor road so naturally only needs to give way to oncoming traffic as per a normal right turn rule.
-
So why the additional give way markings for red if there’s not an additional need to give way? Blue can safely pull into the space across the front of red and then make sure it’s safe to join the traffic coming from the left meaning that the red car should be prepared to give way to traffic emerging from that road as well.

Equally, the blue car should never assume that the red car will wait just because there are give way markings.

Essentially the answer is that red should be prepared to give way to emerging vehicles as well as on coming vehicles and blue should be also prepared to give way to vehicles in the new road and turning in fr the red cars position.

Never assume priority on the the road as it can only be given and not taken and take extra care when you have give way markings. More paint usually means more risk so just assess the situation fully before jumping into it.

Some will say this isn’t a definitive answer but that’s my take on this junction 🤟🏼🚙🚘

Thanks so much to anyone who has engaged, viewed, commented, liked or just seen my content over the last month.. it’s always appreciated and hopefully you’ve either learned something, had something to think about or just generally seen something that’s resonated. Well here’s why I don’t agree with that statement! ❌

Firstly, your indicator isn’t for you, it’s for others to see. If you’re approaching a junction like this, then adding a signal before the lanes split can massively add value to vehicles behind you letting them know where you intend to position.
-
You’ve also got to think about other road users, cyclists, pedestrians etc may or may not know it’s a turn right only lane or the markings may be obscured so an indicator is a very visible sign of intent which again adds value.

If you’re also not going to mislead anyone else by having the indicator on then it does no harm even if your road position is obvious where you’re turning.
-
In takeaway there’s always 2 important things to consider with an indicator;

1. Does it or could it add value and info to other road users?

2. Could it be misleading or give unclear signals for my intentions.

If you ask yourself these two questions then your indicating can become much more useful and effective.
