I'm a bit of a stranger to golf clubs but today I visited Lee on the Solent Golf Club, for therein meets the Fareham Probus Club. We had a good old chat about that now-extinct form of transport, the flying boats. This provoked some fantastic stories and memories from the members, one of whom was kind enough to bring along this rather stunning photograph of a Boeing Clipper flying boat in Southampton Water, taken by his father.

Just back from a fascinating evening out with the Hampshire Industrial Archaeology Society talking about some local stories of the Spitfire. In the audience again tonight to listen to Cheryl Butler talking about Itchen Ferry village. It's always fascinating when fellow local historians' work overlaps your own, but maybe from a different direction or in a different context. In this case, Dr Butler put some of the floating bridge material I use into the world of the local population who both used the bridge and worked on it. The pages of notes I took are testament to a very interesting talk indeed.

The story of RMS Queen Mary is one of my favourites and exactly 90 years ago, right about now, the great ship was approaching Cherbourg on her maiden voyage where she would arrive at 8.47 p.m. A short while later at 12.39 a.m. she was outbound to New York where she berthed four days later to a rapturous reception. Average speed for the trip was 29.13 knots, or 33.5 mph.

It was lovely to return today to talk to the Stubbington Stroke Support Group. We chatted about the liner Queen Mary and I'm always amazed at the depth of people's memories about the ship, given that she left Southampton for the last time nearly 60 years ago. A lady brought some photographs taken by her father of Queen Mary being fitted out on Clydebank in 1936. This is one of them.

Just back from a second visit to Woolston & Sholing WI. I always come home knowing more than I did when I left; today I found out all about Hoover long-service awards from one of the members. The company obviously took such things very seriously.
