This is how a cycle lane on a roundabout can work, as oppsed to half baked lip service - seen sometimes in the UK - puts cyclists at greater risk than following best practice among the other traffic.

A friend recently got a graze on her face and was shaken up by falling from her bike, having braked abruptly to avoid an open car door.
A somewhat similar thing happened to me when I was a novice cyclist in Germany. A big dog jumped out of a car landing in front of me, and I smashed into it, resulting in 2 front teeth broken off, in addition to an upper lip graze.
More recently, my training to teach cycling skills (as per National Standard for Cycling) gives me confidence that I could avoid this outcome in future. Learning points specific to this scenario:
1. Technique for an emergency stop without harming oneself: key point is bracing the arms to stop forward momentum of the upper body when the bike stops abruptly. This needs practice to be able to do it when needed.
2. Passing parked vehicles: always move out beyond the reach of car doors when passing parked vehicles ("the width of the door and a little bit more"), which entails a full overtaking manoeuvre.
There is so much more to confident and competent bicycle riding than is obvious. I give private lessons in both bike control and road riding craft as Sound Cycling. Come and have a skills refresher to help you feel in control of your bike and able to take your place on the road. Beginners and returners welcome. https://www.facebook.com/soundcycling.

Even in a densely populated country like the Netherlands, good solutions are possible with a vision and creative minds.

I had this lovely review from a current learner. It disappeared from my review page!! She is a super receptive and engaged learner, looking forward to being able to travel by bicycle.

What a fantastic first cycling lesson I had with Eleanor on 27th Aug! Thank you so much Eleanor for making me realise that there is much to learn about a bicycle! During that first session, I leant about different parts of the bike including front and back brakes , testing the bike , how to start off and keeping the momentum. The lesson was so informative, detailed and most importantly enjoyable! Eleanor is a very calm and patient tutor . She explained things in a non-judgmental and respectful manner . When the lesson finished , I felt so pleased and couldn’t wait for the next session.
Today , 4th Sep was my second session and as expected, there was so much to learn . I started by being woobly , but after a step by step conversation with Eleanor , I got to ride around the common park! At least , I can start off the bike so much better and that steady and safe stopping is coming up so well. I also rode on different levels , grass , gravel and a bit hilly parts .
All in all , it is an amazing learning experience with Eleanor . I just cannot wait to be able to ride the bike on the main roads !! "
