Wordsworth is a large Primary and Nursery school, rebuilt in 2013, in the Shirley area of West Southampton.

There is something very special about Wordsworth that people notice as soon as they step through the door. We are incredibly proud of our children and supportive staff team who work together in a friendly and caring way to provide a safe and happy learning environment, and we aim to work closely with families to give every child the best possible education. We hope this page will give you

We are still smiling thinking about our fantastic sports day at Upper Shirley High School just before half-term! ☀️👟

A huge thank you to our amazing children, supportive parents and carers, our dedicated team, and everyone at USH for making it such a success.
The children showed incredible determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship, representing our school values perfectly. We are so proud of how everyone cheered each other on and gave it their all! 📣❤️

International Day of Play takes place each year on 11th June.
It's a time to celebrate the power of play. It’s a time to raise awareness about how central play is to every child’s development and well-being. And it’s a time when we can come together to make sure that every child is able to fulfil their right to play.

Why is play so important?

Play builds creativity, resilience, and social skills, laying the groundwork for lifelong learning and well-being. In too many communities, children's access to free, unstructured play is shrinking as public spaces become unsafe, inaccessible, or unhealthy – particularly in dense urban settings and humanitarian contexts. Without safe spaces, even the most engaged caregivers struggle to support children’s right to play. The theme for this year is "Protect play, protect childhood". It is a reminder for all of us - governments, businesses, schools and families - that happy and healthy childhoods are built on play.

Thursday 4th June: Cricket Tournament – Event Cancellation

Good afternoon,

An email has been sent to the Year 6 children this affects. Unfortunately, the Cricket Tournament organisers have been in contact to cancel tomorrow’s event due to the weather forecast.

We apologise for the disappointment this will cause.

They are hoping to reschedule, and we will share an update with you as soon as a new date has been confirmed.

As the school gates close for the holidays, we wanted to take a moment to look back on a truly inspiring half term. At Wordsworth, our promise is to nurture individuals, inspire minds, and prepare every learner to thrive, and seeing that come to life in our classrooms and on the playing fields has been a joy.

A particular highlight was, of course, our brilliant Sports Days! It was the perfect stage for our values to shine through naturally:

Kindness in Action: The way the children cheered for one another, lifted each other up, and celebrated every win (big or small) showed the true strength of their hearts. 🫶

Determination & Drive: Whether it was sprinting to the finish line or trying a brand-new track event, our learners dug deep and showed amazing willpower. 💪🏃‍♂️

Curious & Creative Minds: It wasn't just about sports this term, our classrooms have been buzzing with questions, discovery and brilliant learning right up until the final bell! 🧠✨

A huge thank you to our parents and carers, too. Your fantastic communication and support at our events keeps our community strongly connected, ensuring our children always feel ready, respectful, and safe wherever they are.
Have a wonderful break with your families. We look forward to welcoming everyone back, ready to thrive for the final term! 🚀

Creativity in 3D! 🎨 Our Year 6 children had a wonderful time exploring sculpture in a hands-on wire workshop with the Southampton City Art Gallery.

Our children practiced incredible patience and resilience as they learned to shape and manipulate wire into unique works of art. We love seeing their confidence grow when trying out new artistic skills and expressing their ideas so creatively. 🎨 🙌 🛠️
