Charlton House Independent School is a non-selective day school for boys and girls aged 4 to 11 years. Our school is located close to the heart of Southampton and uniquely situated within acres of spectacular open fields and woodlands. Our four-storey, purpose-built school house has far-reaching views over the city and a number of specialist teaching spaces. All classrooms are spacious, well-ventilated and let in reams of natural light. Adjacent to our main school building is an on-site nursery called 'Early Starts Childcare', which accepts children from 9 months up to 3 years. We understand our social media accounts and website can only give you a glimpse of our school and its community. At Charlton House, Forest School gives our children the opportunity to explore, investigate, create and challenge themselves in the natural world.

Whether they’re problem-solving together, developing physical skills, discovering wildlife or simply experiencing the changing seasons, every visit offers opportunities to grow in confidence, independence, resilience and curiosity.

🔴🟡 Little hands, important skills! 🟢🔵

Our Reception children have been putting their fine motor skills to work, using tweezers to carefully pick up, sort and place colourful balls into tubes.

It might look like a simple sorting activity, but there’s lots of learning happening! Using the tweezers helps strengthen the small muscles in the hands and fingers, while developing hand-eye coordination, concentration and control — all important foundations for holding a pencil and developing confident handwriting. ✏️

The children are also practising colour recognition, sorting and problem-solving as they decide where each ball belongs.

At Charlton House, purposeful play gives our youngest learners plenty of opportunities to develop the skills they’ll use throughout their school journey. ❤️💙

🔨 Building, creating and learning in Reception! 🎨✨

Our Reception children have been busy getting creative with Pin-a-Shape boards, carefully arranging and securing colourful wooden pieces to create their own fantastic 3D pictures.

Activities like this are much more than creative fun! As the children plan their designs and carefully use the small hammer and pins, they are developing fine motor control, hand-eye coordination and dexterity — all important foundations for handwriting and other everyday skills. They’re also exploring shape, position and spatial awareness, while developing concentration, creativity and problem-solving.

We love seeing our youngest pupils learning through hands-on experiences — and taking such pride in what they create! 💙❤️

🍦 A well-deserved end-of-year treat for St. Milner! 🌳

What better way to celebrate the end of a fantastic school year than with a trip to Riverside Park and, of course, an ice cream!

Our St. Milner children enjoyed spending time together outside the classroom, relaxing in the sunshine, having fun with friends and reflecting on a year filled with learning, achievements and special memories.

It was a simple but lovely way to reward the children for all their hard work and enthusiasm throughout the year. 💚

We hope those ice creams tasted even sweeter after such a brilliant year! 🍦☀️

🏆 Celebrating achievement at Charlton House! 🏆

A few highlights from our Prize Giving, a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community and celebrate the achievements, progress and contributions of our pupils.

While the prizes recognise some fantastic individual accomplishments, the occasion is also about celebrating the hard work, determination and enthusiasm shown by all of our children throughout the school year. From academic progress and sporting success to creativity, kindness and living out our school values, there was so much to be proud of.

Congratulations to all of our prize winners, and to every pupil who has worked hard, challenged themselves and grown throughout the year. 👏

We’re looking forward to welcoming our pupils and families back to Charlton House Independent School for the start of a brand-new academic year on Thursday 3rd September 2026. 🏫

Whether you’re returning to a familiar classroom or joining the Charlton House family for the very first time, we hope you’re enjoying the final days of the summer break and getting excited for everything the new school year will bring.

What does it really mean to be school ready? 🎒

It’s not simply knowing letters, numbers or how to write their name. Being ready for Reception means having the confidence to walk into a classroom, communicate with others, follow familiar routines, make friends, explore independently and develop a genuine excitement for learning.

That’s why we like to think of Kindergarten at Charlton House as a pre-Reception experience.

Our Kindergarten children are able to develop their independence, communication, early learning skills and confidence within a nurturing school environment — building strong foundations for the next stage of their education.

For families considering their childcare options, eligible families may also be able to access government-funded childcare hours towards their place.

We currently have opportunities for children to join our Kindergarten in September 2026.

If your child will be starting Reception in the future, why not give them the opportunity to begin their school journey with us a little earlier?

At the heart of our school chapel sits a reminder of the faith, history and values that continue to shape life at Charlton House. 🙏

Alongside the altar is a portrait of Father Jean-Marie de La Mennais (1780–1860), whose educational mission forms an important part of our school’s heritage.

Born in Saint-Malo, France, Jean-Marie became a Catholic priest and devoted much of his life to ensuring that children, particularly those in poorer and rural communities, had access to education. In 1819, together with Father Gabriel Deshayes, he founded the Brothers of Christian Instruction, with a mission centred on educating young people and helping them grow in faith.

More than 200 years later, his belief in the transformative power of education continues to influence Mennaisian schools around the world. His legacy reminds us that education is about far more than academic achievement: it is about developing the whole child, serving others and helping every young person to fulfil their potential.

We are proud that his portrait has a special place within our chapel, connecting today's pupils with the history and traditions upon which our school was founded. 💙
