ntroducing a New Language to Your 3-Year-Old: A Guide for ParentsIntroducing a New Language to Your 3-Year-Old: A Guide for Parents
Embarking on the journey of introducing a new language to your little one can be an exciting adventure for both of you. If you're wondering about the best approach, here are some insights and tips to help you along the way.
Establish a Daily 'Foreign Language' Time at Home
For native-speaking parents, setting aside a specific time each day to speak exclusively in the target language with your children can be incredibly effective. The key is to engage in natural conversations rather than formal lessons. Simply go about your daily activities, but switch from English to the language you wish to teach. This immersive approach can make language learning feel seamless and enjoyable.
For non-native speakers, you can also designate a daily time for language learning, though it might be more structured, resembling a lesson. It might seem ambitious to introduce a second language to a toddler who is still mastering English, especially in a non-bilingual household. However, research shows that young children have a remarkable ability to pick up multiple languages effortlessly. Unlike adults or older children, toddlers can easily recognize and mimic different speech sounds and accents, making early language learning particularly effective.
The benefits of learning a second language at a young age are numerous. From enhanced executive functioning and problem-solving skills to a deeper understanding and appreciation of different cultures, the advantages are substantial. Naturally, these benefits are even more pronounced in bilingual households.
Bilingual Nurseries: A Head Start in Language Learning
Bilingual nurseries provide an excellent opportunity for children to learn a second language from a young age. But how early should children start?
Babies are constantly absorbing new information about the world around them, and it's never too early to introduce a second language. When children are born, their minds are capable of pronouncing any sound. The sounds of their mother tongue become dominant, and they gradually lose the ability to pronounce other sounds. Bilingual children, however, retain this ability and can speak two languages fluently.
Young children's brains exhibit maximum mental plasticity. There is a genuine window of opportunity at this age. The saying "use it or lose it" applies here. As children grow older, their minds become less adaptable to new language learning, losing the flexibility they had in their early years.
The Ultimate Language Immersion: Moving Abroad
For those seeking the most immersive experience, moving abroad for more than six months can be incredibly beneficial. For adults, achieving basic conversational proficiency in a new language typically requires 6-12 months of dedicated study. However, reaching fluency can take 2-3 years of consistent effort. Imagine the progress your child could make in such an environment!
Introducing a new language to your child is a gift that keeps on giving. It opens doors to new cultures, enhances cognitive abilities, and provides a foundation for lifelong learning. So, why not start today? Your little one might just surprise you with their linguistic talents!
At Marco Languages we teach all the children starting at school age.

Steps to Obtain French Citizenship Through Marriage to a French Citizen
It's done by making a "declaration of French nationality by marriage".
It’s a long process but here is some information about requirements:
You can apply for French nationality through marriage, although it is a lengthy process. Here are some key requirements:
1. French Nationality of Your Spouse Your spouse must be a French national on the day of your marriage and must have retained French nationality since then.
2. Community of Life You must maintain a continuous community of life with your spouse, both materially and emotionally, since your marriage. The duration required varies based on your situation:
• You have been married for at least four years and have resided in France for a minimum of three uninterrupted years since your marriage, or
• You have been married for at least four years and lived outside France, with your French spouse registered on the consular registers as a French citizen living abroad, or
• You have been married for at least five years if neither of the above residency conditions is met.
Important Note:
• If your marriage took place in France, the five-year period starts from your wedding date.
• If married abroad, the marriage must have been transcribed to the French civil registration system, and the five-year period starts from the registration date.
Example: Peter married Julie on July 15, 2000, and they transcribed their wedding on July 15, 2005. Peter can apply for nationality on July 16, 2010.
3. Criminal Record You should not have:
• Been sentenced in France to at least six months' imprisonment without suspension,
• Been convicted of a criminal offense against the fundamental interests of the Nation,
• Been convicted of a criminal offense related to terrorism.
However, these restrictions do not apply if the conviction has been rehabilitated or erased from Bulletin No. 2 of your criminal record.
4. Knowledge of French To obtain French nationality, you must prove sufficient knowledge of the French language. Currently, you need to demonstrate oral and written proficiency at least equal to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Upcoming Changes: From 2026, the language requirement will increase to DELF B2 level.
Accepted Proof of B2 Level: You will need to present an official attestation of your French proficiency. Ensure that your certification is valid. Careful don’t look just as the price course, also check the validity of your certification.
Accepted proof of B2 level
To meet this new requirement, candidates will need to present an official attestation of their level of French. Several formats are accepted:
DELF B2 (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française), issued by France Éducation International on behalf of the French Ministry of Education. Valid for life
TCF IRN (Test de Connaissance du Français – Intégration, Résidence, Nationalité), offered by France Éducation International. 2 years validity
TEF IRN (Test d’Évaluation de Français), issued by the Paris Chamber of Commerce and Industry. 2 years validity.
Certain university diplomas issued in French-speaking countries, subject to validation by the ENIC-NARIC Center.
According to the French Ministry of the Interior website, language certifications TCF and TEF must be less than two years old at the time of application for naturalization.
Note : CEFR is a rating that allows you to assess your level of proficiency in a foreign language
At Marco Languages we will help you to prepare your DELF B2 exam only because Valid for life and this will protect you from having to do another test if your declaration of French nationality by marriage takes more time than expected.
