Water Safety at Mortimer
In the UK, swimming is a compulsory part of the primary school National Curriculum in England. By the end of Year 6, all children must be able to swim 25 metres unaided, use a range of strokes effectively, and perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
We are delighted that 94% can swim 25 metres with multiple strokes and 97% can perform a safe rescue.
As our school is so close to many bodies of water, we continue to review how we provide the best possible access to work towards 100% in both areas.

New school area incoming! The final building work has now begun!
The fence work has started today to enclose the front of our school and enhance our outdoor space by nearly 50%. This building work will transform our outdoor opportunity for our pupils. It will support their physical and mental well being and provide our first grassed area!
After nearly 4 years of work, we are nearly there! We can't wait!
Access will remain for residents around the perimeter from Mortimer Road to Ullswater Gardens.

Our 2026 Phonics Screening results are in!
We are delighted to be above national averages again this year. 88% of year 1 pupils met the required standard compared to 82% across the country. In Year 2, 97% of pupils have now passed the screening check.
We are proud to be continuing our journey as an official Read Write Inc. school. As a reading team, we are always looking to develop our skill set and support all of our pupils on their paths to becoming readers. We look forward to continuing our work with the team at Read Write Inc. in the next academic year.

We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the School Games Platinum Mark Award for the 2025/26 academic year (the second year in a row). The School Games Mark is a Government-led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
Mrs Stelling (PE Lead) said "This is not an easy thing to achieve, and it is all down to a TEAM effort from absolutely everyone in the school. Huge thank you to the staff for the amazing PE sessions, extra movement breaks, the festival and competition engagement, SEND provision, supporting and delivering clubs and EVERYTHING ELSE!"
Last year only 6 schools achieved this award in South Tyneside.
