🌟 Success Story: Douglas Starts a New Chapter with Glendale! 🌟

We're delighted to celebrate Douglas, who has successfully secured full-time employment as a Gardener/Driver with Glendale in South Shields through the Connect to Work programme. 🎉

When Douglas joined the programme, he was eager to return to work and embraced opportunities to build his skills, increase his independence and move closer to sustainable employment. From the outset, he remained focused on achieving his goal of securing full-time work and was committed to taking positive steps towards making it a reality.

Working closely with his advisers, Douglas updated his CV to showcase his experience, reliability, driving skills and ability to undertake physical outdoor work. He also completed a Better Off in Work calculation to help him understand the financial benefits of employment and make informed decisions about future opportunities.

Throughout his journey, Douglas embraced every opportunity to learn and grow. He developed his digital confidence, strengthened his literacy skills and received tailored support with job searching, applications and online systems. His commitment and willingness to try new things helped him build confidence, increase his independence and move closer to sustainable employment.

Alongside this, Douglas accessed specialist support from Your Voice Counts, helping him improve his financial wellbeing as he prepared for his return to work.

When an opportunity arose with Glendale, Douglas worked hard to prepare for his interview. He practised common interview questions and used the STAR technique to develop clear, confident responses that reflected his experience and strengths.

His preparation, practical skills and positive attitude paid off, and he was offered the role.

Douglas started work on 25 August 2026 as a full-time Gardener/Driver with Glendale, working 40 hours per week. With continued in-work support, including assistance with workwear and regular check-ins, he has successfully settled into his new role. He reports that he is enjoying the variety of his work, including driving, weeding and general gardening duties, and that everything is going well.

🌟 The Power of Personalised Support and Partnership Working 🌟

One of the things we love most about our work is being part of our participants' journey and celebrating their achievements alongside them. Receiving feedback like this reminds us why we do what we do every day.

Following breast cancer treatment, Joanne joined our Connect to Work programme looking to rebuild her confidence and return to employment. With support from her adviser, Sarah Selby, and our fantastic partners at Smart Works, Joanne has now successfully secured employment.

Joanne recently shared:
💬 "Returning to work felt like a major step, and I truly believe I would not have achieved my goal of finding a job without your support."

Throughout her journey, Sarah provided one-to-one guidance tailored to Joanne's goals and experience. This included helping her create separate CVs for domestic work and adult social care roles, supporting her with cover letters and job applications, and ensuring her skills and experience were presented in the best possible way.

Joanne also praised the support she received through Smart Works:
💬 "The ladies there were so understanding and amazing. Having their expert guidance gave me fresh ideas on how to present myself with complete confidence, and they made sure I was dressed appropriately for my interviews."

As Joanne moved closer to employment, Sarah was there to provide practical support too, helping with her DBS application, registering for the Update Service, arranging uniform trousers, and providing weekly bus passes to help her travel to work until her first wage was received.

Perhaps the most meaningful part of Joanne's feedback was her recognition of Sarah's ongoing commitment:
💬 "I sincerely do not think I would have achieved this milestone without Sarah's dedication, support and guidance, even while she was away on holiday!"

Joanne also shared an encouraging message for others who may be considering employment after a health condition:

🌟 Success Story: Natasha's Journey Back to Work! 🌟

A huge congratulations to Natasha, who has secured a new role with McDonald's in Team Valley after a determined and inspiring job search journey.

Natasha came to Northern Rights looking for a career change after many years working in the care sector. From the very beginning, she showed a fantastic attitude, staying positive, proactive and committed to finding employment.

Working with Luke, Natasha regularly reviewed vacancies and submitted applications across a wide range of sectors, leading to several interview opportunities. She also took part in Dave's targeted job search sessions, where she actively engaged and continued applying for a variety of roles. As she became increasingly job-ready, Michael provided additional support with applications and identifying suitable opportunities, helping her secure even more interviews.

Their hard work paid off when Natasha successfully secured a position with McDonald's in Team Valley. Having previously enjoyed working in hospitality, she is excited to start this new chapter.

Throughout her journey, Natasha faced challenges and setbacks but remained focused on her goal. She shared that she doesn't feel she would have found employment without the support of the Northern Rights team, particularly the encouragement she received during difficult periods. At her in-work support meeting, Natasha shared how grateful she was for the support she received throughout her journey.

Remembering James

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our former colleague and friend, James Grogan.

James was a much-loved member of the Northern Rights team for 10 years and played a significant role in helping shape the organisation we are today. Through his dedication, professionalism and unwavering commitment to supporting others, he made a lasting difference to colleagues, participants and partners alike. His hard work, loyalty and willingness to always go the extra mile helped build the strong foundations of Northern Rights.

James will be remembered not only for everything he contributed to the organisation, but, more importantly, for the person he was. He was a man of integrity, compassion and genuine kindness, always ready to lend a helping hand, offer support or put the needs of others before his own. Whether supporting a colleague, participant or loved one, James cared deeply about people and always looked out for those around him.

For many of us, James was far more than a colleague. He was a great friend whose presence brightened the workplace and whose kindness, honesty and encouragement were valued by everyone who knew him.

James also had a wonderful ability to bring warmth and laughter wherever he went. Witty, intelligent and full of character, he had a fantastic sense of humour and an uncanny knack for lifting people's spirits. Never short of a story, a quick remark or a well-timed joke, he could make people smile even during the most challenging days. His humour, friendship and positive outlook will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of working alongside him.

His kindness, humour and genuine care for others leave a lasting legacy that will not be forgotten.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with James' family, friends and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

James will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by everyone at Northern Rights.

We're delighted to share this wonderful testimonial from Carol McAllister, Interim Chief Executive of Sensibility Matters (SAM), following a recent recruitment campaign:
"I contacted Northern Rights on 31st July to help us recruit an admin support worker for one of our members of staff with sight loss. Anita was very quick to reply and sent 2 CVs for people with the relevant experience.

🎉 Congratulations to Michelle on starting her new job! 🎉

Michelle joined the Restart Programme with Northern Rights in July after spending time as a full-time carer. Returning to work after several years away from employment felt daunting, and she was understandably nervous about taking those first steps back into the workplace.

Working closely with her Advisor, Shelagh, Michelle began rebuilding her confidence by attending training sessions with Skills Trainer Leigh, where she quickly discovered she had more to offer than she realised. She embraced every opportunity, actively participated in sessions, and continued to grow in confidence.

With a refreshed CV and tailored support from the team, Michelle successfully applied for a position at Sea View Café in South Shields. Her hard work paid off when she secured an interview and trial, leading to a job offer and a successful start in employment.

As Michelle moved into work, our team continued to support her through Into Work and In Work Support, helping with practical costs such as work clothing and travel to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Michelle's journey shows that with the right support, determination and belief in yourself, it's never too late to take the next step towards a new opportunity.
