🌿🐞 Coming soon… Tiny Bugs! 🍄🌱

Something new is coming to Little Bugs Abercorn, created especially for our littlest explorers aged 6 months to 2 years.

Tiny Bugs is a parent-and-child class with a difference. Rather than being confined to a hall or playroom, we’re taking those precious early experiences outdoors and into nature. 🌳☀️

Think muddy little hands, crunchy leaves, sensory treasures, songs under the trees, stories in our cosy yurt and lots of opportunities to touch, smell, listen, move and explore. 🍂🪵

Each week will bring a different nature-inspired theme, with experiences carefully chosen for babies and toddlers, from minibeast exploring 🐌 and woodland animals 🦔 to autumn colours, seasonal sensory play and simple nature-based creativity.

And Tiny Bugs isn’t only about the little ones. We want it to be a relaxed, welcoming space for grown-ups too ,somewhere to meet other families, slow down, enjoy a cuppa ☕️ and spend time together outdoors.

🌱 Nature from the very beginning
🪲 Play without pressure
🍃 Connection, curiosity and little adventures together

Tiny Bugs is coming soon to Little Bugs Abercorn.

🌿 Our first week back at Wild Bugs! 🌿

It’s been brilliant to welcome everyone back this week and get straight into some hands-on outdoor learning.

This week our Wild Bugs have been:

🪵 Advancing their whittling skills, building confidence and learning to use tools safely and independently.

📏 Measuring and comparing lengths of willow, bringing maths into a real-life, practical context.

🫐 Foraging for brambles, noticing what is changing in our environment as we move towards autumn.

🌱 Experimenting with natural plant and vegetable dyes, creating different colours to dye our threads and exploring how people have used the natural world to make and create for generations.

At Wild Bugs, learning doesn’t need to happen sitting at a desk. Our provision is designed for home-educated and flexi-schooled children from P1–P7, giving children the time and space to learn through practical experiences, nature, projects, creativity and real-world problem solving.

We follow children’s interests while making meaningful links across the curriculum – literacy and numeracy happen alongside science, sustainability, food, tools, woodland skills, art and exploration. Just as importantly, children have opportunities to build friendships, confidence, independence and a real sense of belonging.

🌿 We currently have a small number of spaces available on Mondays only.

If you’re home educating, considering flexible schooling, or simply looking for a different kind of learning environment for your child, get in touch to find out more about Wild Bugs. 💚

🌍 Could Texas Hold Lessons for Scottish Education?

After spending two weeks in Texas attending the Natural Start Alliance Conference and visiting a wide range of early years settings and schools, Little Bugs founder Louise Licznerski has published a new Substack article sharing her reflections.

Rather than comparing education systems, the article explores educational diversity, parental choice, outdoor learning, professional trust and innovation, asking whether Scotland can learn from a different approach while building on the strengths of our own system.

If you’re passionate about the future of education, this article is sure to get you thinking.

What a wonderful Wild Bugs Discovery Afternoon! 🌿✨

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to experience what Wild Bugs is all about. It was such a special afternoon filled with laughter, curiosity and meaningful outdoor learning.

Together we created beautiful nature crowns, enjoyed whittling and nature jewellery making, climbed trees, explored the gardens, and baked delicious bread twists over the fire. Every corner of the site was buzzing with children and families connecting with nature, trying new skills and simply enjoying being outdoors.

Of course, no Wild Bugs day would be complete without some amazing food, and everyone tucked into a fabulous lunch from Wee Foragers , celebrating fresh, wholesome food enjoyed together in the great outdoors.

It was fantastic to meet so many families and share our vision for an education that gives children the time, space and freedom to learn through real experiences.

If you missed us today and think Wild Bugs could be exactly what you’re looking for, we’d love to show you around. Please email [email protected] to arrange a visit and discover how Wild Bugs offers a different approach to education through nature.

Thank you to everyone who joined us—we loved spending the afternoon with you and can’t wait to welcome you back to Wild Bugs very soon! 🌲🍃🔥💚

🌿 Why does Wild Bugs exist?

Join us for an open online discussion exploring the thinking, research and experiences that led to the creation of Wild Bugs.

This isn’t a sales presentation or an information evening about enrolment. It’s an opportunity to have an honest conversation about why some children thrive when education looks different, and why we believe families should have genuine choice.

Whether you’re a parent, teacher, educator, home educator, local authority professional or simply interested in the future of education, we’d love you to join us.

Together we’ll explore:
🌱 Why Wild Bugs was created
🌱 The philosophy behind our approach
🌱 Why one size doesn’t fit every child
🌱 How outdoor learning can support children’s development
🌱 Insights from inspiring colleagues in Texas, where we’ve been exploring innovative approaches to nature-based education and discussing how different educational systems are responding to children’s needs.
🌱 What the future of alternative education could look like

There will also be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, share your own experiences and be part of the discussion.

We don’t believe there is one “right” way to educate children. We believe there should be meaningful choice—and that every child deserves an environment where they can flourish.

🌿 Introducing Wild Bugs Education Partnerships 🌿

We’re excited to launch Wild Bugs Education Partnerships a new way for schools, local authorities, charities and other organisations to commission outdoor learning placements for children.

At Wild Bugs, we believe every child deserves an environment where they can thrive. Our specialist outdoor learning provision offers meaningful, hands-on experiences in nature, helping children develop confidence, independence, resilience and a lifelong love of learning.

Whether a placement is part of a child’s educational journey, complements existing provision, or provides an alternative way to engage with learning, we work collaboratively with families and professionals to create the right pathway for each child.

We welcome enquiries from:
🌿 Local Authorities
🌿 Schools
🌿 Charities
🌿 Family Support Services
🌿 Health Professionals
🌿 Social Work Teams
🌿 Other organisations supporting children and young people

Placements are commissioned through a daily fee, with flexible options available to meet individual needs.

If you’d like to explore how Wild Bugs Education Partnerships could support a child or young person, we’d love to hear from you.

📖 Thinking about home education or flexi-schooling? Start with this book…

If the idea of learning beyond the classroom has ever crossed your mind, we can’t recommend Free to Learn by Peter Gray enough.

This inspiring book explores how children learn best when they’re trusted to follow their curiosity, solve real problems, play, explore, and spend time in nature. For many families, it’s the book that sparks a completely different way of thinking about education.

At Wild Bugs, these aren’t just ideas they’re what we do every day.

🌿 Woodland-based learning
🪵 Real-life skills through meaningful experiences
🐞 Time to explore, create, question and discover
🔥 Small groups where children are known, valued and encouraged to grow in confidence

Whether you’re considering home education, flexi-schooling, or simply looking for an enriching outdoor learning experience alongside school, Wild Bugs provides a nurturing environment where children can learn differently and thrive.

We’re also incredibly excited that Peter Gray will be visiting Scotland next year, and we can’t wait to hear his thoughts on the growing alternative education movement and to share how the Wild Bugs approach is helping children rediscover a genuine love of learning through nature, curiosity and freedom.

Sometimes, all it takes is one book to help you realise there isn’t just one path through education.

📚 Read Free to Learn.
🌳 Experience Wild Bugs.
✨ Your child’s love of learning might just begin in the woods.

If you’d like to find out more about our Wild Bugs programme or join one of our upcoming Discovery Days, send us a message we’d love to show you what learning can look like when children are free to explore.
