Music, Rhythm and Smiles!

On Tuesday, the children enjoyed a fantastic live music experience at school. We were delighted to welcome Elfyn Jones and his colleague, Pat, who performed using a variety of musical instruments. The children had the opportunity to listen, respond and join in throughout the sessions.

Both EYFS and KS1, as well as KS2 pupils, took part in their own interactive workshops and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and engagement from everyone involved. A great time was had by all!

Bishops Nympton School Art Week 2026

Art Week began with a mission:

‘As a rural school, located far from the galleries that contain the most famous works of art, we want to begin to create our own gallery of iconic artworks (bringing the gallery experience to the children of our school!). This year our theme is ‘People in Art’. Our final pieces will be on permanent display in our school hall and we hope to continue with our mission, adding further famous pieces of art to our ‘gallery’, covering a range of themes, over the next few years.’

What a wonderful Art Week showcase we had at the end of last week! The hard work and effort that went on in each class was fantastic and all the children (and grown-ups!) should be very proud of what was achieved. A huge thank you to all the staff and children in each class for embracing the challenge, refining their skills so brilliantly and for producing such beautiful results. Thank you to all the parents and families that attended our showcase and for the lovely comments about the work on display. We are very excited to get the four permanent exhibits, representing ‘People in Art’, up in the hall for all to see and appreciate.

What a fantastic part of our London residential - huge thanks to our MP Ian Roome for taking time out to chat to us and answer our questions 😊

It was fantastic to meet Bishops Nympton Primary School in Westminster.

They gave me a full recap of their Houses of Parliament tour and grilled me with some excellent questions on farming, the cadets, and meeting the King!

Thank you for visiting, and safe travels back to North Devon!

Castles, Clues and Curiosity! Class 3 Explore Historic Dunster

Class 3 enjoyed a fantastic trip to Dunster this week to enhance their foundation subject learning this half term.

In the morning, the children worked with Sophie from The National Park to explore the village and think about what Dunster may have been like many years ago. They visited important landmarks, including the famous Yarn Market, and carried out a survey of the High Street to investigate different land uses. The children were amazed to discover there were 8 different souvenir and gift shops! They also spent time discussing tourism and considering the impact it has on the village.

After successfully dodging the rain showers and enjoying their lunch, the class visited Dunster Castle. The children loved exploring the grand rooms, climbing the impressive staircases and searching for the secret passage Sophie had told them about. One of the castle guides shared a fascinating story about how King Charles, when he was a child, once used the secret passage leading to the old stable block to escape the castle and ride away over the hills on his horse!

The children were on their feet all day and represented our school beautifully, as always.

Well done, Class 3!

A Wild Morning with Exmoor Zoo

Class 1 had a fantastic experience this week when Steve and Mim from Exmoor Zoo came in to help us with our learning about Amazing Animals. We met some incredible (not so) mini-beasts; giant snails (all called ‘Slips’), an enormous stick insect (‘Mrs Brown’), a beautiful praying mantis (‘Morticia’), a huge spider (‘Boris’), and some mealworms that eat polystyrene!

So exciting and great engagement and interaction from all the children.

Without a doubt, the star of the show was our final visitor, ‘Rascal’ the meerkat. What an incredible opportunity, to see a meerkat up close and to be able to stroke his tail!

We couldn’t be more grateful to the Exmoor Zoo team for bringing such a fascinating animal roadshow into our classroom and we are so incredibly proud of the children who participated; sitting beautifully, listening carefully to instructions and all joining in and having a go. The super behaviour was commented on!

What a great morning for us all.

The Dictionary of Difficult Words - Class 3

"Vocabulary is like the paint you use to create an image in someone’s mind. The better your vocabulary, the more vivid the picture."

Words truly came to life last week as Class 3 transformed themselves into some wonderfully unusual vocabulary! Each child carefully planned their costume and created a sign to explain the meaning of their word, as well as identifying its word class.

The children put in lots of effort and thoroughly enjoyed sharing their learning, teaching friends from across the school about their chosen words.

We are incredibly proud of their creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence.

Here are some photographs of their fantastic costumes for you to enjoy!

Mud, Miles and Medals! 🏅Exmoor Challengers Conquer the Course!

Amazing Adventurers! 🌟

A huge well done to our incredible Exmoor Challengers who took part in the real event over the recent Bank Holiday weekend! More than 500 children from across the country gathered on Exmoor, with our two teams competing against 65 other teams in their category — what an amazing achievement!

Our five challengers were absolutely fantastic, showing outstanding endurance, navigation, timekeeping and resilience as the weather conditions became tougher throughout the day. Their hard work, determination and team spirit truly shone through every step of the challenge.

Charlie B faced a particularly difficult task, leading a team on his own alongside children from other schools. He rose to the challenge brilliantly, encouraging and supporting his teammates all the way to the finish line. Thanks to his leadership, every member of his team completed the impressive 16.1-mile course and proudly earned their medals!

Meanwhile, our second team — Charlie S, Joe, Annabelle and Jimmy — delivered an absolutely phenomenal performance, winning the prestigious Seward Cup! 🏆 This is an incredible achievement and a truly amazing result against such strong competition. They should all feel enormously proud of what they accomplished.

We are so proud of all of you for your courage, perseverance and determination. You are true superstars and wonderful ambassadors for our school! ⭐👏

Nursery and KS1 Family Lunch Success

We were delighted to host another of our wonderful Family Lunches recently — this time for our Nursery and KS1 children! It was fantastic to see so many families attend and support the event, making it such a warm and memorable occasion for everyone involved.

We hope you enjoyed the delicious roast lunch as much as the children enjoyed sharing this special time with you. The hall was filled with smiles, conversation and a lovely sense of community throughout the afternoon.

A huge thank you to Mrs Kennealy and Miss Jennings for once again preparing such a tasty meal for us all. Their hard work and care were truly appreciated — especially on a beautiful spring day!

Ready, Set… Explore! Exmoor Challenge 2026

🌟 The Exmoor Challenge 2026 is here! 🌟

Tomorrow is a very exciting day as our five brave adventurers set off on the incredible Exmoor Challenge, joining around 500 other children for an unforgettable journey!

They’ll be taking on an impressive 16.1-mile trek across Exmoor, using their map-reading and compass skills to navigate the route all by themselves. Along the way, they’ll tackle tricky questions and challenges—what an adventure! 🧭

This is no easy task, and completing the challenge is a fantastic achievement. Every single one of our team members truly deserves their medal at the finish line! 🏅

Our pupils have worked incredibly hard to prepare, covering lots of miles over the past two weekends. Last weekend, they even walked further than the actual challenge distance—what determination!

A huge thank you goes to all the parents and helpers who have supported and encouraged the team along the way. We couldn’t do it without you!

🍀 Good luck to our amazing challengers—we are all cheering you on! 🍀
