A little article about the traditions in France relating to mardi gras, from its pagan origins down to today. Noteworthy is the idea behind the disguises: "C'est ainsi que les pauvres pouvaient s'habiller en riches, les hommes s'habiller en femmes, des laïcs s’habiller en religieux, des civils en policier ou gendarmes et vice versa". Sounds very saturnalian!
