Getting people singing for the first time is probably the best thing ever as a guitar/music teacher. People have preconceptions of what they can and cannot do, and when you help them start to surpass that in just one lesson it’s amazing… for all concerned!!!

In just 10 seconds I can quickly assess if it’s gonna be an easy ride… (ie checking someone’s inherent sense of pitch). If they can find a note and match it vocally - however wobbly the journey to get to it - we are onto a winner. But what’s more, that is learnable for most if it doesn’t come naturally - it just takes a little longer.

Very few people have no sense of pitch, despite what they might have been led to believe!

If the ‘pitch match’ test goes well, and someone wants to do it, the rate of progress from that point on can be quite rapid!! I have a tried and tested method that got me going 20 years ago and has worked great on all my pupils that want to try…

You don’t give someone a guitar and expect them to play it.. the same with your voice. If you have not been brought up in a singing environment, a few tips and pointers, and practice exercises, can go an awful long way to getting you moving. Rapidly!!!

Then the next step, singing and playing together. All about the progressions. Think baby steps. Simplify both, then ramp up slowly.. one step at a time.

Sound interesting? Drop me a message if you fancy giving it a go!!

I’ve had a bit of a run of new pupils of late, which is always good. The last, on Tuesday turns out to be just fourteen days younger than me - haha, a good sign obviously. He’s been playing for around four and a half years, and wants help with both his guitar playing (feels he’s stagnating) and his more recent first steps into singing. The perfect pupil for me in some ways.

A fast learner I can see from lesson 1 - I sense a steep and very rewarding learning curve right there! Looking forward to being part of his journey 👍🎶 👊💥

Now that’s a bit spooky. A pupil asked to look at ‘Heart Shaped Box’ (Nirvana). I’m showing him out of the door after the lesson and as I’m closing it I spot this glinting on the step… 😳🤔🙄😄 ❓❤️🎶.

She’d bought him a guitar and a block of lessons to go with it.

‘Here you go, get yourself down there!!’ Haha, talk about being thrown in at the deep end! 😱

He handled it very well. A fast learning natural it turns out… and ‘he loved it’ apparently!! Proving it’s never too late, despite what you might think… 🎸🎶😄👍😎

Had another ‘birthday lessons’ enquiry a while back, from the wife of ‘the victim’ 😅. She’d bought him a guitar and wanted a block of 4 lessons to go with it..

I’m not a massive fan of AI but I was very impressed with the voucher she did for him to go with it… 👍👌

Haha, talk about being thrown in at the deep end!

‘Here’s you guitar, go!!’

Maybe an hour’s notice?! …. I thought he handled it very well!! 😅😅😅

A very fast learner it turns out, and ‘he loved it’ apparently. Proving it’s never too late to start, despite what you might think. 🎂🎈🎸🎶👍😀

Thought I might just share this here if I may…
One of the many things I get up to now… haha, when I’m not teaching guitar that is. This is the 2nd of two forthcoming group shows I’m involved with over the next couple of months.

Great if you could take a look see on Instagram and give it a like or a comment and share with anyone that might be interested. Feel free to follow for more…

Big musical influences in much of my art, so worth checking out the event on 10th -12th April if you are local to Leigh on Sea, down here in sunny Essex!! The opening on the evening of Friday 10th is the place to be if you like a glass of wine!!

Thanks in advance…

‘Nobody Knows You When You Are Down And Out’ … on a pupil’s ‘car boot’ guitar picked up for just £4!!! What happens when an 11 year old pupil picks up an old 3/4 size ‘classical’ at a car boot sale and his dad asks if I could restring it… !!

First I removed what was left of the the rusty old steel strings someone had fitted, cleaned it up a bit, oiled the fretboard, and then restrung with the nylon it was designed for…

Bridge set up alone is the one reason steel strings on a nylon guitar is never gonna work - so don’t do this folks, you will never get it in tune! Tying on the strings can feel a bit daunting for someone used to ball ends, but it’s definitely worth the hassle. A nylon strung guitar, even a cheap one, has a character all of its own.

This was never gonna sound amazing but it plays just great… and the lad now has a playable acoustic to muck about with to compliment his electric..

I’ll be teaching him this very soon…

‘Strange’ - my take on this awesome song by ‘Sons of Legion’. I dropped the 2 bar, 3 chord sequence onto the looper and then brought in with the intro melody. Even the verse and chorus melodies sound great on the guitar with a little distortion - and even better doubling the vocal. The instrumental break is just improvisation on the D blues scale…

Doing this with quite a few of my pupils at the moment - quite a lot to learn in the process…

An exercise in arrangement for one guitar and voice..

‘Wish You Were Here’ - Solo Arrangement!! I’ve been playing this solo arrangement of this Pink Floyd classic for years (the two intro guitar parts in one in effect). It’s fairly easy to play the 2nd part of the intro with the lead line and just enough of the first guitar part to hold it together… Makes all the difference to a solo performance and always goes down very well…

I teach this to most of my pupils, and is quite achievable at quite an early level believe it or not. Very good ‘value for money’ as it were… difficulty against the effect achieved.

Feel free to get in touch if you fancy an online lesson or two to nail this…

Two back-to-back earlier than usual lessons this morning with youngsters on half term. The first, a soon to be 12 year old, picking up one of the bluesy riffs I do with everybody so quick! (20 minutes is the norm to get the sequence sorted enough to take away and polish - we did it in about 8!!)

Then a just turned 8 year old running through that and a bunch of other little rock riffs we’ve done, finessing them with the emphasis on feel and the nuances of timing, with the help of the Cahon (Peruvian drum box). All about sitting on the beat… where to pull it back, where to drive it forward. Learning to play with others… probably the most important lesson of all..

A great start to the day!!! 🎸🎶👌👍😎
