Ever wondered what mock exam season looks like for a GCSE teacher?

This is a pile of 50 exam papers, roughly two classes' worth of just one exam. Year 11s sit four GCSE English exams.

If, like my school, your child's school has year 11s sit the full English Language and English Literature exam, they will be marking four papers per student. So for one class, that's somewhere between 100 and 120 papers.

For me, English Lit paper 1 is my quickest to mark. It's the one I examine and therefore the most confident in. But even then, it takes me around 6hrs to mark 25-30.

For all four papers, it might take me around 30 hours of work.

Think of your English teachers this mock exam season!

When reading An Inspector Calls, ever thought Gerald Croft just 'wasn't that bad'?

Of all the characters, I think he's absolutely despicable.

For an insight into why, and to bulk up your GCSE responses, have a read.

Gerald Croft, son of Lord and Lady Croft and fellow manufacturers of Mr Birling is initially presented as arguably the most likeable of the family characters in Priestley’s didactic play An I…

Studying Romeo and Juliet and wondering why it's such a big deal?

Well, historically, tragic heroes are male, but in this play (and just one other of Shakespeare's works) the female Juliet is one of the eponymous characters.

If you ask me, I think Juliet is more of a tragic hero than Romeo. Here's why...

As with all of Shakespeare’s tragedies, Romeo and Juliet are the eponymous tragic heroes of their play, but when viewing the play, and particularly when teaching and learning the content, the…

A little about me...

Hi, I'm Georgia, a qualified secondary English teacher living in Benfleet, Essex. I've been teaching for 8 years (including a couple of breaks to have two babies) and tutoring since I was 18.

Over the years, I've helped seven young people pass their GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature exams, all grade 4+, and three achieving a whopping 7+. That's not all - I'm also an examiner for AQA Literature Paper 1, so I've got that extra insight into how to get the best marks.

When I'm not teaching, I'm taking my kiddos to their extracurricular classes, watching quiz shows, reading books, or exploring the UK with my family and dog.
