Damson Wood Nursery and Infant School Damson Wood Nursery and Infant School Academy opened on 1 August 2016. We're a friendly, creative and caring school situated in Damson Wood, Solihull.

We provide schooling for children aged 3-7 years old and also have on onsite childcare facilities.

We have had a brilliant start to the year in Maple Class!
In English, we have been reading the story 'Cave Baby' and the children have been working very hard writing their predictions about what they think will happen next. We have also been using adjectives this week to describe the different animals in the story.

In Maths, we have been sorting different objects into groups based on their colour, size and shape. All of the children have worked very well independently, as well as working as a team to sort the objects. We have also been focusing on recalling our number bonds to 5 and composition of number. The children have shown their teamwork skills when working in pairs to make 5 using cubes and bead strings.
We had lots of fun in Art using watercolours to create a background which replicated a field. We then went out to Forest School and collected leaves, grass and flowers to add to our paintings.

In Geography, we have been learning about physical and human features. We went outside to do some fieldwork and looked carefully at our school grounds. The children's task was to spot different features on the playground and to decide whether they were human or physical.
We have also been learning about different types of weather in Science and the children matched the weather to the correct pictures, as well as creating their own weather trackers. We went outside to look for different signs of Autumn and discussed the four seasons.

Walking to school has many benefits and can help parents and carers to make this change a happier and less stressful experience. Families who walk to school with their children often see this as some of the most precious time they have with them. It’s an opportunity to spend quality time, without the distraction of driving. This is the time when you can discover how their day has been, what they have learned, how they have felt and whether they have any concerns.

Willow Class started phonics this term focusing on the sounds of s, a, t, p. We have focused on our fine motor skills by cutting different textures of paper, using the tweezers to pick up objects, manipulating elastic bands to create different patterns and used playdough to squeeze, pinch and roll to develop their hand muscles.
We have been practicing a song which uses sign language for singing in assembly, the song is 'Three Little birds' from British Sign Language.
The class has also been learning about different emotions, we have focused on sad and happy. Talking through why you might feel sad and what makes you happy. The children helped draw something they felt would make the sad monster feel better, for happy the children drew something that made them happy.
We did PE and Forest School for the first time last week. The children enjoyed these experiences and learnt how exercise is good for our bodies.
Willow Class have discussed Pirates too; we have looked at images of pirates and a pirate ship. We have discussed what we could see, noticing differences and similarities between the different pirates and pirates' ships.
We have been practicing our writing and drawing, and our new sounds. We have been learning and drawing our families on the white boards. We have also been making patterns in our maths area using different materials.

We are so proud of the way the children in Nursery have settled so well to their new environment. It has been fantastic to see the children arriving with a smile and already learning to put their coat and bags away all by themselves. The children have been coming to sit on the carpet to sing songs and rhymes and listen to stories.
In addition, the children have been learning to use the toilet independently and have enjoyed exploring the different areas of the Nursery and getting to know each other.
The children have had lots of fun exploring the outside area too; playing on the train and in the sand.
Last week we had a particular focus on hand washing. We have talked about the different steps of handwashing and put photos up in the bathroom to help the children remember. We discussed when we need to wash our hands and why it is so important.
We enjoyed putting glitter on our hands (pretend germs) and giving our hands a really good wash until it had all gone! The children enjoyed their first P.E session this week. I was very impressed with how well the children were able to qu**ky stop when they heard the tambourine and stand on a spot. The children were able to copy some simple movements and move around the hall safely.
We have also started our daily Rhyme Time sessions, this involves singing our Rhyme of the Week and playing a game which develops children's awareness of rhyme, rhythm, syllables and alliteration. This week our rhyme was 'Hickory Dickory Dock’.

Cook Stars Club is open to pupils in Maple and Beech Class, and runs every Monday from 3:15pm until 4:30pm.

Gemz After School Club is on Tuesdays from3:15pm until 4:15pm.

Welcome back!
It has been a fantastic couple of days welcoming the children back into school – it’s just not the same around here without them. It has been wonderful to watch them walk proudly on to the playground in their new uniforms, bursting to get back in the classrooms and meet their teachers. It sounds like the holidays have been a lot of fun for the children but now they're keen to get back to their learning and enjoy all that the curriculum has to offer.
It may have been quiet without the children, but over the holidays our site team have been incredibly busy carrying out tasks on the premises. This includes: a new automated gate, a play area for Reception and lots of hedge and tree work. This is all planned to enhance the learning experience of the children as well as making the site as safe and as pleasant as we can make it. We will share more details and pictures soon.
We have also taken some time to launch our new school values. These values will provide the framework for everything we do as part of our school community. We're going to be working through these values with the children over the coming year and exploring how we can put them into action.
As always, please keep an eye on the events and diary dates we share in the newsletter each week as we will keep you updated with everything that is going on in the life of the school.
We're looking forward to another fantastic year in school and working with you to ensure that the children at Damson Wood get the best possible start to their school journey.
