“Can't imagine a better way to start a Friday!

This morning I was joined by my Touchwood Solihull Marketing Manager Lucy Burnett and Operations Manager Mark Driscoll at fellow Chamber members SOLIHULL ACADEMY to deliver a careers talk and hold mock interviews with Year 11 students.

Students talked about how good Solihull Academy had been for their confidence and development, and it was very rewarding to hear that 'they were buzzing' after their mock interviews.

I was no academic at school but it hasn't stopped me enjoying success by having the right attitude and trying to outwork those around me. As such I've been lucky enough to work in successive roles that I have LOVED. That was the key message today - 'Find a job you love and never work a day of your life.'

Huge thanks to Matt Gregor and the team for allowing us to get involved today and for helping build the mutually beneficial relationship we have fostered between us.”

We are feeling so grateful and touched by the support of Tony Elvin and his team from Touchwood. Today, they visited Solihull Academy to speak about career opportunities and conduct mock interviews for our students. Their guidance and encouragement will surely help our students reach their full potential in their future endeavors. Also, a huge shoutout to our amazing students who were engaged and positive throughout the experience. We are so proud of you!

Our Science students have been investigating how the heart works this week.

The Royal Institute visited Solihull Academy. They brought with them an exciting assembly on the different forms of energy in everyday life.

Students were able to get involved with explosions, balloon popping races and handling radioactive materials!

On Friday, we were lucky enough to have the University of Worcester Riverside Dance Company come into the Academy to deliver a dance workshop to a group of students. The girls had an AMAZING time and were an absolute credit! We are looking forward to our next workshop in the New Year. Strictly here we come!!!

On Monday 11/12/23, SA competed in our FIRST EVER netball competition!!!
A huge congratulations to the girls who won the match quite convincingly with an 8-1 Win 😊

A massive well done to both Billy and Jaylon who competed in The SAPMAT Table Tennis Tournament. There was stiff competition from 3 other schools However, SA were crowned the winners, Congratulations Billy!

Our year 11 students have been investigating the inner organs of the head this week.

Only 20 sleeps until Christmas!!!!

Our students have started getting into the Christmas spirit by starting their Christmas Tree soldering projects.

For the month of December, students with 100% attendance will be entered into a raffle on the last day of term with one student coming home the winner of this giant Toblerone!
All students with full attendance from 4th - 22nd December will be entered in to win this prize. We know as the mornings get darker and colder it can be challenging for the students to motivate themselves to come in, please encourage your child to continue to attend and remind them that we are here to help and support should they need anything.

In line with International Day of Persons with Disabilities which falls on 3rd December, Solihull Academy collaborated with Fidel Thompson CEO of Breakin Barriers Spinal Cord Injury Awareness, a charity that supports people with spinal cord injuries to create an event of Wheelchair Basketball with the help of local team Solihull Bears. Fidel helped create the most amazing day of inclusivity and inspirational moments for a group of students who are not wheelchair users to experience. Craig Pinkney and Troy Deeney (Former Blues Footballer and local boy) came along on the day to share their stories and inspire our young people. Team SA had the most incredible day, from learning the fundamentals of wheelchair use in a Basketball environment and the skills used in the game to having some fun challenges, races and a mini tournament at the end of the day. Our thanks go out to all those involved!

Hypothesise, investigate, and repeat!

Our physicists in Year 11’s have been investigating Hooke’s Law this week.

Tomorrow, Friday 17th November, we are raising awareness and money for BBC Children in Need! Both staff and students are encouraged to wear something spotty for a donation of £1. Looking forward to spotting you tomorrow.

Some lovely feedback regarding one of our students from their work experience provider:
" Yesterday was the second day of work experience; today's initiative was to give them a glimpse into the work that Breakin Barriers delivers to young adults from similar backgrounds. Huddersfield youth awareness conference 2023 was held at Huddersfield University. Many youths in the room, councilors, and Yorkshire police heard testimonies from adults with lived experiences from jail to life-changing situations. The Youth Awareness Conference 2023 aimed to stress to the youth about life choices and their consequences and how their decisions in life could have a ripple effect moving forward. It was imperative to listen to the youth's thoughts and help them become more emotionally intelligent within themselves to make better life choices. The student engaged well and recognised similar situations from his own are occurring nationwide. They engaged well not only with the youth but also with adults from different constituencies like councilors, police superintendents, lawyers, and social workers.

I thought this day was imperative to add into their work experience criteria, to give him food for thought, to break the narrative "we are not defined by our surroundings" day to day by breaking barriers and stigmas by applying hard work, focus and education our dreams are within our grasp."

Yesterday some of our business students visited the NEC for the Grand Designs Live exhibition. Staff and students had a hands-on experience, discovering all about eco-friendly building projects, and innovative character concepts of a grand design!

Students enjoyed testing samples from many unique businesses that form part of a big, grand design project. They came away with a wide range of future job role ideas that they had never heard of before, and it was a great experience! Thank you, , for having us; # TEAMSA had a blast!

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Solihull Academy is closed to students tomorrow, Friday 6th October 2023, as it is an INSET day!
