Pastures New Quilting

Pastures New Quilting

Hi, I'm Joy. I provide a range of patchwork and quilting lessons and short courses which are suitable for both beginners and improvers.

If you are looking for Patchwork and Quilting classes or courses in the Birmingham and Solihull area then you are in the right place. Classes are friendly and informal and I keep class
numbers small so that I can give you plenty of
individual help. The class schedule is updated regularly with new class dates added throughout the year so check back often. However, many of the classes are very popular and quickly become fully booked so early booking is recommended!

Operating as usual

Over the last 12 years I have taught many people traditional skills of Patchwork and Quilting.

Wind-Back-Wednesday. The Bags of Possibilities course was occasionally renamed 'Bags of Impossibilities! Lots of lovely bags were made but we learnt that patterns could be very challenging, puzzling but also rewarding.

The Quilt in a Jar monthly course has a simple premise: you arrive to find a jar on your work station, inside the jar is a complete mini-quilt - you just add wadding! But each jar presents a skill challenge. The challenge here was to make the entire top as one continuous chain piece. No thread cutting, no making individual strips, you make the entire top in one continuous piece!

The Tea Party quilt, designed by Wendy Williams is another year long quilt project nearing completion. This was challenging for all the curves and appliqué but is stunningly beautiful with all it's intriguing details.

Two courses show the skill of appliqué. The Introduction to appliqué one day course teaches the basic technique, then you can progress to quilts such as 'We Three Birds' from Birdhouse Patchwork Designs, where that skill is developed.

Joy's classes always aim to stretch those who are brave enough to take on her challenges. Here's another Quilt-in-a-Jar session, the Squares on point Quilt. This time making teeny, tiny squares pieced into a small mat 15" x 12".

'Quilt-in-a-jar' (QIAJ) is a new course for 2023. The premise is simple, everyone is given a jar at the start of the session. In the jar is the pattern, instructions and all the fabric required to make a small pieced top in a day. The quilt tops are small but demand a high degree of skill, often new skills. This QIAJ is for a square, made up of small fabric squares that are chain pieced - that's that whole quilt top, in one continuous chain, no cutting!

Octopuses Garden by Pearl Pereira is proving a popular Block Of The Month course. Lots of detailed turned edge appliqué is challenging but the results are so delightful.

Memory quilts, made from a loved one's clothes, are a lovely reminder for relatives to keep. But they present a real challenge as they often involve a range of fabrics that would never normally be used in quilting.

Foxley Village Block of the Month by The Birdhouse is another 12 month course that is coming to a conclusion. It's a delight to see how different each quilt is through different fabric choices.

Last August, in the balmy summer weather, the patch of land behind the Sea Cadets Centre began a transformation. 8 months on the weather is not so pleasant but there are now two new sizeable classrooms taking shape along with storage and offices.

A year long course nearing completion was Tea Party by Wendy Williams. It's always a delight to see how the same quilt pattern made by different quilters turn out. Different fabric choices results in a wide variety of quilt tops.
