A good question can do so much in the classroom.
It can check understanding, reveal misconceptions, make thinking visible, retrieve information from long term memory & help every learner participate in the lesson. Thatβs exactly why I wrote Questioning for Teaching & Learning: a little guide for teachers who want practical ideas they can use straight away, without overcomplicating things.

Common sense isn't always common practice in the classroom, I say that from experience not a place of judgement!
On the surface these points seem obvious but they are important.
Has anyone ever asked you multiple questions at once, by the time they finish asking you can't remember what the first question was? Perhaps you haven't understood the question, until it is phrased another way or without the jargon? The deliberate pause allows for deliberating thinking, to prepare to share an answer. Picking strategically goes beyond the traditional 'hands up' method, which there can be a time & a place for but we know it's problematic, flawed & doesn't involve all learners. The probing is digging deeper, and I will be giving lots of practical examples for this in my upcoming webinar on Thursday. If you can't make it live, everyone with a ticket will be sent the recording. You can find out more info & book tickets here:

Feedback: Decision Making Guidance
Here's a slide I shared with staff this morning at Morrison's Academy in Creiff, Scotland during the INSET training.
It's not about telling teachers which type of feedback to give & when. It's guidance to think about & reflect on. Teachers can use their own professional knowledge, expertise & judgement to ensure the feedback they provide to learners is appropriate & actionable.
I've written more about this in my Feedback books if you're interested!
