The robot in this clip finished 15th in the world at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Finals in Istanbul, as the only team representing the United Kingdom.

It was built by teenagers from Shirley, and not one of them was recruited in. They started in a normal weekly session, earned a place on the squad, and then gave it five hours a week from September to July.

The only UK team on the field at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Finals in Istanbul. Semifinalists, and 15th in the world, in the team's third season.

Fifteen Robocoders, six departments, five hours a week from September to July. Every one of them started in an ordinary weekly session in Shirley.

Parents often ask what their child actually ends up making. This is one answer.

A small robot, wired by hand, running a course on the floor of the Studio Lab. The motors and the code behind it are the child's own work, and most of the learning happened when it did not work first time. That part is the whole skill.

Most parents in Solihull want their child to be confident with technology. Few expect them to be building robots that see.

He is ten. A camera watches his hand and the arm copies every movement. Behind it sits computer vision and inverse kinematics, running on a Raspberry Pi over a headless Linux connection. The people who normally write this code are undergraduates.

This is course four of the Robotics pathway at our Shirley centre. It carries a BCS Level 2, which is GCSE equivalent.

For a 6-year-old, learning about electronics shouldn't start with a textbook. It shouls start with building something themselves...

At ROBOCODE, our YoungerBots pathway for ages 6 to 9 introduces robotics and electronics through practical, hands-on projects.

Young people explore circuits, sensors, motors, movement and more by actually building, testing and seeing what happens for themselves.

Across the programme, they work through 10 projects and 40 lessons, with around three quarters of each session dedicated to the build itself.

Because concepts like electronics can feel very different when a young person can see them working right in front of them.
It's not simply about telling them how technology works.
It's giving them the opportunity to discover it for themselves.
