The best creative writing I saw this summer wasn’t the longest. It was the most controlled.
I’ve marked hundreds of GCSE English papers, and one thing that stood out in AQA English Language Paper 1 Question 5 was the difference between writing a lot and writing well.
Remember, Question 5 is worth 40 marks, 50% of Paper 1.
The strongest responses didn’t rush through pages of events. They had a clear sense of direction and made deliberate choices about:
✍️ Setting
👤 Character
🌿 Bigger ideas
🔁 Motifs
⚖️ Contrasts
🔄 Cyclical structures
💭 Feelings and atmosphere
🎯 What to reveal and when
They took their time.
They created meaning.
They controlled their writing.
Some weaker responses became very long but lost direction. Others relied on page after page of dialogue or a predictable “it was all a dream” ending.
More words do not equal more marks.
Quality over quantity, every time.
Before you start your next Q5, ask yourself:
What am I trying to make my reader feel?
What is my bigger idea?
How will I structure my writing?
What choices will I make deliberately?

A Grade 4 to a Grade 6 in one school year… 📈
This student joined my GCSE English Literature courses last year, and it has been fantastic to see her progress.
She started Year 10 on a Grade 4 and finished with a Grade 6.
Her parent said:
“Thank you so much for your support with this. Your detailed analysis really helped her to improve by two grades. She now has this year to push further and hopefully get those top grades.”
For many students, Shakespeare can be one of the most challenging parts of GCSE English Literature.
They can struggle with:
📖 Understanding Shakespeare’s language
🧠 Remembering and selecting useful quotations
🔍 Knowing what to analyse in a quotation
✍️ Moving beyond retelling the plot
💭 Developing a clear argument about characters and themes
📚 Using context effectively
🎯 Understanding Shakespeare’s methods
🔗 Linking ideas across the whole play
Knowing the story of Macbeth isn’t enough.
Students need to understand how to turn their knowledge into a developed, analytical argument.
That’s something we work on throughout my Literature courses, with a focus on building confidence, developing analysis and understanding what examiners are looking for.
And this is why I believe in slow, steady progress.
A two-grade improvement doesn’t happen overnight. It’s built through consistent teaching, feedback, practice and gradually developing the skills needed to write stronger essays.
She now has another year to keep building on that progress and hopefully push towards those top grades. 📈
