With strong morphological skills, students can approach a novel multisyllabic word and break it into parts in order to predict the meaning. This skill helps in all areas of literacy: decoding, spelling, comprehension, and oral language.

Reading nonsense words is always good to revisit. These silly words are vital to phonics instruction because it forces the reader to use their letter sound knowledge to read the word instead of memorisation.

Phonemic Awareness
Rhyming is the foundation for advanced phonemic awareness skills. It's crucial for literacy development, including reading and spelling.

We got the spatula out to give the rhyming word a good whack!!

It's common to mix up different letters, especially 'u' and 'y'. Pop a letter into a bag and ask the child to feel the letter to see if they can work out what letter is in the bag.

Tactile learning will help transfer learning to their long-term memory.

What's the way to make reading easier and faster? There are just a few steps and the text becomes much more readable:

*enlarge fonts to 12-14 point

*enlarge 35% inter-letter / character spacing

* enlarge Inter-word spacing

* ❗️avoid underlining and italics❗️

*use dyslexia-friendly fonts- you'll find some of them in the graphics 😉
