Today's location on our bucket list tour is Uluru, in Australia. We learn about here in Year 7 (summer term).

Tourism to Uluru allows people to experience other cultures and see sights they would not normally. It also allows people to learn more about the Aboriginal culture of Australia and educate others. For many years indigenous Australians have valued their own land and culture. To Aboriginal people Uluru is a cherished site and should be restricted for non indigenous people. When tourists used to climb this sacred rock Aboriginals were offended as this showed disrespect towards their culture and beliefs (the dream-time). The negativity the tourists had on this Aboriginal landmark soon became a political problem.

Today's location we are looking at is Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We learn about Rio de Janeiro in Year 9 when we look at issues in an urban area.

Rio has one of the Modern Seven Wonders of the World, the statue of Christ the Reedemer. It attracts lots of tourists year in, year out. Another thing that attracts tourists is the beautiful beaches that Rio has. They hosted the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. However, life is not glamourous for all poeple who live in Rio. Poorer people who have migrated to the city from the countryside are forced to move into areas of low quality and build their own homes. This has created favelas, illegal settlements. Some people struggle to gain employment so turn to crime to make money.

Today's location we are looking at is The Himalayas. We learn about the Himalayas in Year 11 when we look at the Nepal earthquake.

The Nepal earthquake in 2015 led to large scale destruction. It also causes an avalanche on Mount Everest. This led to the deaths of 22 people. In total, around 9000 people died. Those who lived in hillside communities were cut off, and had to be rescued by helicopter. The area has recovered, which has allowed more people to climb Mount Everest.

Part of Geography is discovering the world around us. There are several places we learn about as we move from Year 7 to 11. This week we are going to take you through our Geography Bucket List of places we teach about.

The Coral Triangle, Asia
In Year 8, we learn about The Coral Triangle.
This is a beautiful coral reef found around the Philippines and Indonesia. This area is at risk as people use the area to fish. However, to get the fish, they create explosives, which they drop onto the reef. This kills the fish, making it easier to catch them, but it also kills off part of the coral reef.

All students loved the session and learnt about the importance of science in everyday life. They listened amazingly too – Well Done Year 8!

Here are the PE extra-curricular clubs for next week.
Please ensure students bring the appropriate PE kit for the activity they are attending. Shin pads should be worn for football and gum shields for rugby.

Did you know that two centuries before Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer was called the “Father of English Poetry”? In the 1300s, many writers of the time were writing in French and Latin, but Chaucer chose to write his works in English. Geoffrey Chaucer's gravestone became the first of what would later be called Poet's Corner in Westminster Abbey.
