Shireland Collegiate Academy 🔸 Secondary school and sixth form
🔸 Smethwick, West Midlands
🔸 Outstanding in 3 Ofsted categories

Shireland Collegiate Academy is a large inner-city secondary school in Smethwick, Sandwell, West Midlands. Over the past few years, the Academy has gained a reputation for effective use of technology to improve standards, innovative curriculum design and embedding new approaches to learning. The Academy has been judged as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2006, 2010 and 2013. Significant curriculum innovations have played a large part in the Academy’s success. The Academy offers an integrated, competency assessed (without levels structure), thematic curriculum at KS3 and a weekly extended period of time (focus days) to students in KS4 and KS5. This has provided increased enriched activities to students as well as a platform for excellent controlled assessment delivery. The Academy is a Teaching School (one of only three in deprived areas) and was the National Pupil Premium winner for the West Midlands in 2015. The Academy is also running large-scale research project with the Education Endowment Fund and 24 local primary schools and has written 6 technology-enabled educational toolkits for the Examination Board, OCR. Over the last decade, we have harnessed technology for learning and supporting school processes which enable our high levels of progress. Every child has their own device across all year groups and the online platform, the Learning Gateway, is the driving force of our academy community. It provides access to class on-line areas and teacher resources designed to support and enhance learning for our young people. In the last few years, the quality of classroom delivery has changed dramatically through the use of a Flipped Learning approach, where work at home comes before a lesson and student online responses result in more targeted support and work in class. Teaching has been judged as Outstanding in the last two Ofsted inspections and more than two-thirds of the teachers in the Academy are currently judged as Outstanding. Flipped Learning through the use of Class Sites on the Learning Gateway has been an essential part of this journey.

📍🇧🇪 Battlefields Trip 2026 🇫🇷

Today, our students continued their journey through some of the most significant sites of the First World War, gaining a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by so many.

The group visited the Thiepval Memorial, Vimy Ridge Memorial, Beaumont-Hamel, Ulster Tower, Lochnagar Crater, Sanctuary Wood, and Tyne Cot Cemetery. Each location offered a powerful opportunity to reflect on the human stories behind the history, bringing classroom learning to life in a truly memorable way.

From the vast memorials that honour the missing, to the preserved trenches and battle-scarred landscapes, students demonstrated great respect and maturity as they explored these important sites. Visits such as these help us remember the courage, resilience and sacrifice of those who served, while encouraging our young people to reflect on the lasting impact of conflict.

Here are some more photographs from another fascinating and thought-provoking day on the Battlefields. 📸

Our U16s (10s & 11s) Basketball Team beat our local rivals Holly Lodge in an enthralling and highly entertaining basketball game last night. The game went right down to the wire and we won 44-43.

It was a fantastic match, and the all the boys did our school very proud by the effort they put in and the professionalism they demonstrated on the night. We were up against a school are very strong at basketball and train every night.

This result is an accumulation of the hard work and dedication the boys have put in over last 3-4 years, the hard work of their coaches.

What does learning at university look like? 🎓

Our Year 11 and Year 13 students had the opportunity to find out during a session with UCL (University College London).

They explored how university learning differs from school, took on the challenge of thinking critically and solving problems, and developed their communication skills. They also found out more about UCL and the courses available.

A valuable opportunity to explore what university has to offer and start thinking about the possibilities ahead.

📢 Focus Day Reminder

Tomorrow, Thursday 8th October, is our next Focus Day!

Students will be taking part in a range of activities, trips and curriculum sessions throughout the day.

Parents/carers, please check the information below carefully, as some Year 11 and Year 12 students will need to wear their own clothes or Academy PE kit rather than their usual Academy uniform.

We’re looking forward to another fantastic Focus Day! 🌟

On Sunday 4th October, students from SCA performed at the Crescent Theatre as part of the Trust’s Star for a Day project. Hayley from HYPA Dance Company came in to deliver three workshops, where the students were taught and then given the opportunity to polish their performance within a very short period of time.

Our students then performed live in front of their friends and family at the Crescent Theatre with other Trust schools, and we couldn’t be more proud of everything they achieved during the project.

The whole project was supported and facilitated by Miss Hughes, our Creative Director, alongside Mrs Ajayi and Miss Cartwright from the Inclusion Department. Miss Cartwright also attended the performance at the Crescent Theatre to support the students.

It was fantastic to see the students grow in confidence, develop their skills and ultimately take to the stage and perform in front of a live audience and meet new friends along the way. A huge well done to everyone involved! 🌟
