Comparison is something I think a lot of us struggle with, especially in this industry.

It’s so easy to scroll through Instagram and feel like everyone else is doing more, achieving more or getting further ahead than you are.

I’ve been there, and sometimes I still find myself doing it. But the truth is, constantly looking at what everyone else is doing can make you forget just how far you’ve come yourself.

Your journey, your circumstances, your priorities and your version of success are all different.

I’m learning that building a business isn’t about doing everything everyone else is doing. It’s about figuring out what works for you, what you enjoy and what you want your life to look like alongside your business.

You can admire someone else’s success without feeling like you’re failing.

Your progress still counts, even when it looks different to someone else’s.

Save this as a little reminder for the days you need it.

It took me 8 years in business to figure this one out! 👀

Last year, I changed the way my clients book their appointments, and honestly? I wish I’d done it sooner.

For years, I allowed clients to book up to 3 months in advance. I thought it worked well, but my cancellation and rearrangement rate was HIGH. I couldn’t understand why.

Then, after taking some time off, I returned to work with a completely different approach.

I only opened bookings one month in advance, and clients had to book their own appointments.

The difference? HUGE.

My clients are happy, I’m happy, and my cancellations and rearrangements have dropped significantly.

Here’s what I realised…

We all make plans in advance, but life happens. Plans change, things crop up, and suddenly that appointment booked 3 months ago no longer works.

But as nail techs, we plan our working days around those appointments. When a client needs to rearrange, we often feel obliged to squeeze them in elsewhere, even when it doesn’t suit us.

And that’s how we end up working around everyone else’s schedules instead of our own.

So, what do I do now?

On the last Sunday of every month, my booking system opens at 7pm for clients to book their appointments for the following month.

They only ever have ONE appointment booked ahead.

The instructions are clearly explained in multiple places, the booking system opens at 7pm sharp (and trust me, they’re ready for it 😂), and I confirm all appointments on my next working day.

That’s it. Simple.

My clients know how it works, they’re happy with the system, and I have far more control over my diary.

For example, December appointments won’t open until 30th October.

Sometimes, the answer isn’t working harder. It’s finding a better way of working.

And even now, after nearly 10 years in business, I’m still learning how to run my business in a way that works for ME, too. 🤍

Burnout. It’s not a badge of honour.

It’s real, and it’s happening to nail techs everywhere.

I never thought it would happen to me. It crept up on me and then hit when I least expected it.

My body was already so exhausted. How did I expect it to recover from major surgery?

My body forced me to stop. It forced me to realise I wasn’t indestructible, and that working the way I did was incredibly unhealthy.

Don’t learn the hard way like I did.

Your business should support your life, not consume it.

It’s okay to look back at how you used to work and realise you were doing things wrong.

Actually, I think that’s a really important part of improving.

You learn more, your understanding changes, your technique evolves… and suddenly you can see exactly what you couldn’t see before.

Don’t be embarrassed by your old work.

Be proud that you know better now. 🤍

If the opportunity comes along, say YES. Because you never know how incredible it’s going to be. 🤍

I absolutely LOVE teaching. But I’m used to teaching 1-1, in my little studio, where everything feels familiar and comfortable.

So standing in a room full of 20 incredibly talented nail techs and delivering a 2 hour presentation was… all kinds of pressure. 😂

I was shaking through pretty much the entire thing. I just couldn’t stop.

I was so worried it would be boring. That there wouldn’t be much interest or interaction. That I’d stand there for 2 hours and completely lose everyone.

But WOW… was I wrong. 😂

The interaction, the questions, the conversations… it was SO much better than I ever could have imagined.

2.5 hours was over in a flash because it was honestly amazing.

And I’m so glad I said yes.

Even though I was absolutely terrified.

Sometimes you just have to say yes, put yourself outside of your comfort zone and trust that you know your stuff.

There’s honestly nothing glamorous about getting better at nails.

It’s repetition. A lot of it.

Doing the same thing over and over until your application starts to feel cleaner. Practising the things you know you’re not great at. Taking a set off and immediately knowing what you’d do differently next time.

It’s booking more training because you realise there’s still so much you don’t know.

It’s making mistakes. Trying again. Practising again.

And sometimes, if I’m being honest, it’s wondering whether you’re actually getting any better at all.

But you are.

You just don’t always notice it while you’re in it.

You don’t become a really good nail tech overnight. There isn’t a magic product, a secret technique or one training day that suddenly changes everything.

It’s putting the work in, over and over again. Even when nobody is watching. Even when it feels like you’re not getting anywhere.

There’s no shortcut.

Just practice, patience, learning and a lot of repetition.

And honestly, that’s the bit nobody sees.
