Q: What are shooting stars?

A: Shooting stars are not stars at all. They are tiny bits of rock or dust burning up in Earth's atmosphere. When a space rock hits the air at enormous speed, friction heats it until it glows — a quick streak of light.

Meteor showers happen when Earth passes through a trail of debris left by a comet. If a piece survives all the way to the ground, it is called a meteorite — much rarer.

A useful KS1/KS2 starter before holiday meteor-watching — keep the "not a star" distinction clear.

**Q: Could we live on Mars?**

**A:** Not without a lot of help. Mars is cold, the air is thin and mostly carbon dioxide, and there is no liquid water on the surface today. Astronauts would need sealed habitats, spacesuits and supplies from Earth.

Scientists are studying Mars to learn if tiny life ever existed there and to plan possible future visits. Living there full time is a story for science fiction for now — but exploring it is real science.

A useful starter for KS2 and KS3 planets topics — keep the distinction between exploration and everyday life clear.

Sad to hear Jodrell Bank will lose funding and perhaps close. As part of a huge cutback in UK funding of astronomy research. Obviously it's important to prioritise funding, but it's certainly a shame the UK won't be at the forefront in the coming years!

Astronomers warn it would tear the heart out of UK science, and leave a generation untrained.

This week's question from the dome…

**Q: Why is Pluto not a planet?**

**A:** In 2006 astronomers agreed a clearer definition of "planet." A planet must orbit the Sun, be round because of its own gravity, and have cleared other objects out of its path.

Pluto is round and orbits the Sun, but it shares its region with many similar icy bodies. So it is called a dwarf planet — still interesting, just a different category. Science updates when we learn more; that is normal.

Useful for KS2 and KS3 Solar System topics — pupils often ask this after learning the eight planets.

A question we often hear inside the dome…

**Q: How many planets are there?**

**A:** In our Solar System there are eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They orbit the Sun in order, from closest to farthest.

Pluto is no longer counted as a planet — it is a dwarf planet in a belt of icy worlds beyond Neptune. Scientists also know about thousands of planets around other stars, but our eight are the ones we study most in school.

**Q: Is the Sun a star?**

**A:** Yes. The Sun is the star at the centre of our Solar System. It is a huge ball of hot gas that makes its own light and heat by squeezing atoms together — the same process other stars use.

We see other stars as tiny points because they are much farther away. Our Sun is actually quite an ordinary star, but it is the one that matters most to us — it gives Earth light, warmth and energy for life.
