Today our focus was understanding 3- and 4-digit numbers — not just reading them, but really knowing what each digit represents.
We started with place value counters, physically building numbers before using a part-whole model to partition them. This hands-on approach helped build confidence and make the value of each digit clear.
Then came our "Spot the Mistake" challenge!
This was all about reasoning and mathematical discussion.
First, we proved the mistake using manipulatives. Then we took away the resources and explained, in our own words, what the mistake was and why.
From doing, to understanding, to explaining.
That's the beauty of a mastery approach. We take small steps, build secure foundations and give children the confidence to explain their mathematical thinking. ✨✨✨

As part of our phonics sessions this term a couple of the children have been looking at the story ‘A house that once was.’
Over a few weeks we read small chunks, I modelled sentences introducing a selection of exciting vocabulary and taking small steps to build the story. The children used the modelled sentences to support their own writing making individual choices.
The final section was each child’s own ideas for an ending.
Both children should feel very proud of themselves ✨ Totally brilliant! 🤩

It might have been a heat wave outside but the children were as cool as ice in the workroom this week. 🧊
Reviewing our recognition of alternative graphemes in some of the phonics sessions - taking a cube for every correct sound and seeing who has the tallest tower. ✨
Reinforcing our phonic knowledge by spotting, reading and sorting graphemes. ✨
Moving this on to listening to words and identifying the correct grapheme and segmenting the words to spell them correctly. ✨
Deepening our understanding from last weeks work on division using place value counters to exploring the part whole model and making the links between related facts. ✨

Using games is an excellent, low-pressure way to reinforce fundamental maths skills while keeping learning enjoyable and engaging.

Over the last few weeks, we have used pyramid cards to explore place value and compare numbers, discussing how to identify the greatest value. We also enjoyed a domino race track for times table practice and played a double dice game to get three in a row. This not only challenged times table knowledge but also provided the added benefits of subitising the dots on the dice for quick number recognition and mentally adding the totals together.

The main focus of one of our lessons was exploring different strategies for solving division problems. After investigating grouping we moved on to using place value counters. This hands-on approach helped to develop a deeper understanding of how division works and gave plenty of opportunities to explain mathematical thinking. We will move on to ‘lots of’ and inverse calculations to strengthen our understanding over the next few weeks.

I think the smile tells you everything you need to know about how confident this 'superstar' was feeling by the end of the session! 😊

Now is the perfect time to plan ahead.

By this point in the school year, it’s usually much clearer where children feel confident… and where they may need a little more support before September.
Children from Early Years to year 6 will benefit from securing:
• number sense
• fluency
• phonics
• reasoning
• confidence in speaking about their thinking

Tutoring doesn’t only have to be for children who need some extra support. Many families use it to:
• boost confidence
• deepen understanding
• encourage enjoyment of learning
• or simply give their child a smaller, more personalised learning space alongside school.

Equally, tutoring can also provide valuable consistency and support for children who, for all sorts of reasons, are not currently in a school setting.

A gentle, confidence-building approach at this time of year can make a really big difference.

Starting before the long summer break can also help you decide whether regular support would benefit your child going into the next academic year — rather than waiting until difficulties feel much bigger in autumn.

A few months of targeted support now can help children: strengthen foundations, build confidence, close small gaps before they grow and head into the next year feeling positive instead of overwhelmed.
