My Bulgarian holiday is nearly over, and I deliberately took almost 4 weeks away from structured gym training.
But every other day I’ve been doing three exercises:
💪 Push-ups
A simple horizontal pushing movement that works the chest, shoulders and triceps, while your core has to keep the whole body stable.
🦵 An adductor exercise
The adductors are the muscles of the inner thigh. They help control the hip and stabilise the leg, which matters for everything from walking to squatting.
🦵 An abductor exercise
These work the muscles responsible for moving and stabilising the leg away from the body. Strong hip abductors help with pelvic stability, balance and lower-body control.
Why these three?
I simply wanted a tiny amount of resistance work that takes a few minutes, requires almost no equipment and keeps some muscles reminded:
“Sorry. Holiday or not, you still have a job😄.”
The rest was walking. Lots of it. Swimming.

The important thing is understanding the difference between reducing your training for a period and believing you've somehow “fallen off the wagon”.
There is no wagon.
There is just life, with fitness built into it.

A Carb-Heavy Breakfast? Yes. But Not Naked 😀
These beauties are called banitsa, a traditional Bulgarian filo pastry.
Two are filled with white cheese.
One is sweet.
And yes...
I ate all three. 😂
But look at the second plate.
I added quark and tomatoes.
That little change is the whole point of one of my favourite nutrition rules:
No Naked Carbs.
Carbohydrates are not the enemy.
But eating a large amount of quickly digested carbohydrate on its own can produce a faster rise in blood glucose, followed by a stronger insulin response.
And for many of us, the practical consequence is familiar:
You eat.
You feel satisfied.
Then surprisingly soon...
you’re looking for food again.
So instead of removing the pastry, I build a better meal around it.
🥧 Banitsa gives me carbohydrates for energy and, equally importantly, pleasure. One of mine was sweet because life is allowed to taste nice.
🥣 Quark adds protein, which supports muscle and makes the meal more satisfying.
🍅 Tomatoes add fibre, volume and micronutrients, while helping slow the digestion of the overall meal.
Protein and fibre alongside carbohydrates can slow glucose absorption and create a gentler, steadier response than eating those carbohydrates alone.
And that is exactly the principle behind the food combinations I teach.
The result for me?
I can eat a breakfast like this and not feel hungry again for hours.
This is what I mean when I say nutrition becomes much easier once you understand the principles.
You don’t have to spend your life asking:
"Am I allowed to eat this?"
A much better question is:
"How can I make this meal work better?"
That is a completely different relationship with food.
And it is much more useful than another list of forbidden foods.
If you want more simple, practical fitness and nutrition guidance for 40/50+, I have a collection of free resources on my website.

Three ways to Target Belly Fat After 40/50

Belly fat after 40/50 is not only about appearance.

The softer fat you can pinch is subcutaneous fat. The deeper visceral fat sits around the organs, and that is the type we particularly want to reduce for long-term health.

There is no single exercise that can magically remove fat from one area. But these three methods work brilliantly together:

1. Combine strength with short bursts of cardio

Start your timer. Try 10 controlled deadlifts, then sprint, row or cycle for the rest of the minute.

Rest for one minute and repeat six times.

Use a weight you can control. Beginners can replace deadlifts with a dumbbell hinge and the sprint with fast step-ups.

2. Add 100 controlled abdominal reps

Choose one light-resistance abdominal exercise.

Complete 25–30 reps (or as many as possible at one go), rest briefly, then continue until you reach 100.

Do this every other day.

These 100 reps will not melt belly fat on their own. But they increase activity and blood flow around the abdominal area, which may help mobilise nearby fat. Combine them with walking, strength training and sensible nutrition for the best chance of changing your waistline.

3. Walk briskly for 30–40 minutes

Walk fast enough to feel warm and breathe more quickly, but not so fast that you cannot speak.

For the best results, combine your walks with strength training, abdominal work and sensible nutrition.

You do not need a miracle workout.

You need several simple methods working together consistently.

How? I lost almost 1kg since my last workout 5 days ago, on Tuesday?More than 1kg, actually, if I compare today’s weight with Monday’s.
Did I somehow burn a kilogram of body fat while wearing a summer hat by the pool? No😄.

During a hard training block, the number on the scales does not represent body fat alone.

Strength training can cause temporary muscle swelling while the body repairs itself. Your muscles also store glycogen, and every gram of glycogen is stored with water.

Once the training stops, the post-workout swelling settles. My eating pattern changes too, so my glycogen and water levels can shift.

In other words, some of that weight was probably never “extra fat” in the first place.

It was water, stored fuel, food being digested and all the other things the scales conveniently combine into one rather unhelpful number.

I have personally seen as much as 3kg disappear after finishing a training period. That does not mean everyone will lose 3kg, or that I magically burned 3kg of fat. It means that body weight fluctuates.

Of course, I have not stopped moving. Today I walked at least 5km through Varna’s Marine Garden. I am swimming, walking more and generally spending less time attached to a chair.

My food intake also adjusts naturally. After seven years of training, I know almost intuitively what to add and what to reduce slightly.

No workout? - No pre-workout meal .
More walking and swimming?- Fuel accordingly.
Beer by the sea?Mission approved 🍺😎.

I am not following a restrictive holiday diet. I am simply matching my food more closely to what my body is doing now.
That is what understanding nutrition gives you: FREEDOM
