As a Maths teacher, and a mom, I am encouraging all parents to engage with their children (and teens, because I have been told that after turning 13 they are not children anymore, yet I still have to collect socks off the floor ) in daily maths activity. Money is tight these days, so why not teach them what interest is? Did you know that there are 2 types of interest? You can have simple interest, where you only take into account the original amount only and compound interest that gets recalculated using the amount at the end of the given period.
To make it fun, give the children 2 purses with £10 each. One will have 10% simple interest, meaning you put £1 each week. The other purse has compound interest, so at the end of the first week you will add £1. At the end of the second week you will add 10% from the total £11 the child has in the purse (£1.10). At the end of the third week, you will add 10% from the £12.10 in the purse (£1.21). Continue to do so for the remainder of the lockdown. When this is all over, ask them to count and decide which one is better. You can use different percentages, different amounts and you can ask the secondary kids to derive a formula for compound interest.
For help, let me know.
Enjoy the lockdown and make memories that they will cherish forever.
