GCSE RESULTS DAY YESTERDAY 🤩
How did it go?

Hopefully you were celebrating not just results but also all of your accomplishments since starting secondary school.

If Maths, English or Science didn’t quite go as you’d hoped and you need to re-sit, get in touch.

‘Working harder this time’ isn’t the answer. A change of tactics is what’s needed. And my fantastic tutors can help with that.

Morning,

I’ve never shared a GoFundMe on my business page before.
I have no idea who this lady is.
I came across her on someone else’s page.

But, as a mum, I completely understand her wish for her precious children to be safe and secure. ❤️
And as a teacher, I’ve seen how the lack of a safe and stable home as well as devastating loss impacts children first hand.

I just thought how easy it is to share her post and although my few pounds make very little difference, if lots of people do the same, it’ll get her closer to her dream.

IS THIS YOU TOO?

“My child is working through practice papers and has the knowledge, but he still keeps making careless mistakes.”

This is almost always likely to be down to reading the question too hastily, missing key words, or rushing through steps.

Firstly, have you tried building in more breaks and making sure he isn't overly tired?

“Furthermore, he insists on working out everything in his head to save time, but I think this is part of the problem.”

Boys in particular like to do the calculations mentally. The problem is, at this age children can't hold a huge amount in their head whilst under the pressure of solving 50-60 questions.
Ask them to use a working out sheet sequentially for all the questions and trace back to it when you are reviewing the mistakes. It may require a little effort but you are likely to notice a clear reduction of silly mistakes and improved scores.

Another strategy is to take photos of the mistakes, underline the tricky bit, like finding area when painting two sides, cost per each child per week, etc.
You will make a collection of these and before each practice test quickly go through these with the child.

In addition to this, you could pick a maths or English paper that they have already done and without actually solving it, ask them what they would do for each question.

Silly mistakes can only be overcome by practice.

Underline or highlight the key parts of the question to ensure full comprehension, so this information stands out!

If they do not want to do working out on the test paper, provide an extra piece of paper. Sometimes, they feel more inclined to show their workings if they think it won't be seen!

Check if the ‘silly mistakes’ are from the same topics; it could be a conceptual understanding barrier.

Finally, do the work at different times of day and with snacks! No-one works at their full capacity when tired or hangry 😊

Lots of children make silly mistakes. Don't worry. Keep going. At this stage, you’re building confidence.
