๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸŒŠ Inspiring the Next Generation on the Solway Coast๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒฟ

This week, the Solway Coast National Landscape team was delighted to work alongside EUROPARC Atlantic Isles and Landscapes NI to host part of their exciting Youth Exchange Programme.

A group of young adults from Northern Ireland spent time exploring some of the Solway Coast's most special places, gaining first-hand experience of the landscapes, heritage and conservation projects that make this area so unique. Their visit included:
๐Ÿ“ Discovering the rich history of Holme Cultram Abbey
๐Ÿ“ Learning about our working farmed landscape at Blue Dial Farm
๐Ÿ“ Exploring nature restoration projects at RSPB Campfield Marsh Reserve and Mawbray Banks Nature Reserve
๐Ÿ“ Experiencing the diverse coastal habitats and fascinating rockpools of Allonby Bay with Cumbria Wildlife Trust.

A huge thank you to all our partners who helped showcase the very best of the Solway Coast National Landscape.

Building our youth engagement:

We are also excited to announce that we are developing a Solway Coast National Landscape Youth Panel, building on the invaluable contribution that young people can make to the future of our area. The panel will bring together young adults aged 18-25 who live, work, study, or have a connection to the Solway Coast, giving them opportunities to share ideas, influence projects, and help care for the landscape we are all proud of.

Interested in joining the Youth Panel?

We'd love to hear from you. Drop us an email at [email protected] and tell us a little about yourself.

We had another brilliant bird ringing demonstration yesterday with the West Cumbria Ringing Group. It's always worth the early start to see birds in the hand, learn about the biometrics that are collected and hear more about the species that we find at Crosscanonby Carr.

Thanks to the bird ringers for sharing their knowledge and to those who came along for being so engaged.

๐ŸบHistorical Cookery with John Crouch ๐Ÿบ

Join us for a fascinating historical cookery demonstration with chef John Crouch at Blue Dial Caravan Park on Saturday 12th September, where we will explore the area's rich Roman heritage through food and discover how local ingredients and traditional cooking methods shaped everyday life nearly 2,000 years ago.

Starting with an optional, short walk around Milefortlet 21 to uncover the stories and evidence of the Roman presence on the Solway coast and learn how the landscape has shaped life here for centuries. Then heading back to the farm to discover the foods, flavours, and cooking techniques used by Roman soldiers and communities who once lived along this frontier landscape.

A light bite lunch will be offered. Get a true taste of frontier life with a hearty Roman army soup cooked by John Crouch, crafted to reflect the authentic rations that fuelled the legionaries stationed along the wall.

This relaxed event is perfect for anyone with an interest in history, food, and local heritage.

Spaces are free but limitedโ€”click the link below to secure your spot!๐Ÿ‘‡
