As the countdown to Christmas begins, 136 children from the local area will be opening a chocolate advent calendar this morning, thanks to the generosity of the West Lodge Community.

Thank you to Ms Brackstone who organised the collection of the calendars and delivered them to the Slade Green Foodbank, who distributed them to children in the local area.

We're incredibly proud of the strength of the our community.

Year 4 enjoyed a visit from an archaeologist who gave them tips on studying Anglo-Saxon artefacts found at Sutton Hoo. The children learned to consider key questions such as:
What was the artefact made from?
What was it used for?
Who would have used it?
We certainly have some budding archaeologists in the class!

As the leaves fall from the trees KS1 and 2 Craft Club have been exploring how to create a painting using different techniques. They learnt how to stipple to show the grass and the path, and used pastels to show a haze from the moon. Pointillism was used for the leaves. The children worked cooperatively and each KS1 child had support from a KS2 child.

We know that class sizes of no more than 22, and one class per year group, provide your child with the best start; which is why we have no plans to increase our intake.

This does, however, mean that there is significant demand for places at West Lodge. Why not start your admissions journey by booking a tour of our school here: https://www.westlodge.org.uk/book-a-tour

Green screen technology transported Year 6 pupils to a wide variety of settings from a dentist's surgery to a running track to the supermarket to film advertisements they have been creating in this cross-curricular project.

Using persuasive features, they worked hard in small groups to persuade their audience to buy either a new brand of trainers, dog food or toothpaste.

We look forward to sharing their adverts with you soon so you can see for yourselves how persuasive they have been!

A wonderful wall of colour greets visitors to our Art Room...

Our Year 5 pupils enjoyed learning about the colour wheel and how all colours are made from the primary colours of red, blue and yellow. They mixed their own secondary colours and then created colour wheels using both paint and coloured paper.

Year 4 really enjoyed their Science investigation into the weight of carbon dioxide.

Within our Science curriculum there is an emphasis upon practical, investigational work which helps the children to understand theoretical concepts. Children at West Lodge love the chance to learn through being totally hands-on and finding things out for themselves.

As part of their learning about festivals of light, Reception created a Rangoli pattern on the floor using coloured sand and rice and copied Rangoli patterns using Numicon.

Additionally, they printed some repeating patterns in the style of fireworks.

Lest we Forget....

Year 6 children explored a variety of pencil grades to create their pictures. They added tissue paper and buttons to make the poppies.

Year 3 carefully followed instructions to make their pinwheel poppies. The children learned about the meanings of the different colours used for poppies and chose which colour was significant to them.

A lovely tribute from the children at West Lodge.

This term's Learning Power Focus is resilience and was introduced to the whole school in an assembly. Children enjoyed watching a video clip showing a small child learning to walk, which helped them to understand 'we're all born resilient, so let's not lose it!'

Research from the Education Endowment Foundation provides insight into just one of the reasons why we focus on metacognition at West Lodge.
