As part of A Level Fine Art studies, we were lucky to have local artist Sam Aspinall-Firth, realistic charcoal portrait artist, work with Y12 and 13 to help them develop their skills in portraiture and the details of using charcoal to create photo-realist textures, based on tonal accuracy. With the application process for next year’s year 7 cohort underway, we are looking forward to meeting lots of new year 6 faces this Saturday for Activities Morning.

Looking back at the first four weeks of the academic year, it’s incredible to see how much our current y7 have managed to pack in! From cementing friendships, trying new things, stepping out of their comfort zones - generally embracing SHS life and seizing every opportunity given to them.

It’s World Teachers’ Day today and so here’s to the brilliant teachers of SHS! It really has been a remarkable first month back at school having celebrated excellent exam results over the summer and welcoming so many new faces, boys and girls, into our wonderful school.

The school timetable is packed with a busy programme of art, drama, music and sport, whilst academic interventions and clubs fill break times and lunches - all led by our team of dedicated and passionate staff.

Year 12 Geographers spent Wednesday in Telford and Ironbridge investigating the sense of place and environmental quality. On Thursday they spent the day at Preston Montford field studies centre carrying out investigations linked to the water and carbon cycles, including testing infiltration rates of different surfaces, interception rates of different vegetation and calculating the carbon content of trees, soil and leaf litter. Supporting their classroom studies and exploring methods they could use in their own fieldwork investigation that they will undertake next summer.

Thanks to David Metcalfe from Newcastle University who spoke to Y12 students about a range of academic study skills, including effective reading and note taking, essential for the EPQ but also a key skill for those going on to study at university.

He also talked to the students about time management and different techniques they could employ to project manage their workload and reduce stress.

The involves an independent research project such as a 5,000 word dissertation or artefact and can be worth up to 28 UCAS points. Find out more at our Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 6th October.
